I'm busy trying to get something to work that's not going to work. Then I have to prove to my advisor that it's not going to work and that he should therefore let me write a terrible paper and get this nonsense over with.

KrazyHorse
30-09-2009, 05:54:34
I've been working 100-120 hours a week for the last 5 weeks or so.

JM^3
30-09-2009, 06:21:45
I have only worked over 100 hours a week for a couple of weeks in my life (during my experiment + a couple other weeks).

Right now I am averaging maybe 60? But honestly, I am exhausted, I don't have the push in me (as seen by the 5 hours I spent socializing and drinking just now... it was meant to be 2 hours max, preferibly while doing work).

JM

KrazyHorse
30-09-2009, 06:37:10
One week I was close to 140. I was sleeping ~3 hours a night and didn't do anything else other than work.

JM^3
30-09-2009, 06:37:52
Ick. How can you be effective like that?

Honestly, any time I am over 80 I am not being very effective. I maxed out at 120, and I don't think I have been capable of over 80 this year.

JM

KrazyHorse
30-09-2009, 06:55:26
I was decently effective for most of the week. Afterwards I slept 19 hours straight and was back to something approaching normality.

JM^3
30-09-2009, 06:57:59
I can't do that, I can't even do what I use to do.

I have generally had 1-3 nights without much sleep the last couple of months. Even that seemed to start making me feel bad, at least that is what I am blaming my several days of high heart rate on.

JM
(I actually did that sort of schedule for some of college, but it was because I was playing video games/etc, not because I was working.)

Academics sucks.

JM^3
30-09-2009, 07:19:29
Yeah, one of my friends graduated since I last visited MD (May?). He spent 10 days writing his thesis. He was going to take a post doc, but applied to and got a consulting job that pays almost 6 figures (and should rise rapidly).

I think I have 1-2 more friends who are my year and haven't graduated. One I don't know about, he is a GR student and I haven't talked to him in years. The other I haven't talked to in a bit over a year and will graduate this semester.

JM
(Another friend is also almost at 6 figures, and is working for GAO or something. He graduated last year though.)

KrazyHorse

I'm right in the middle of the pack. Our incoming class was huge (29). We had ~10 quit and ~8 graduate by now.

KrazyHorse
30-09-2009, 08:14:32
I wrote about half the introduction to my thesis (the intro is the only part I really have to write from scratch; the rest will consist of me simply reformatting the two completed papers + 1 I'm trying to kill currently)

JM^3
30-09-2009, 08:16:13
Yeah, I expect you can still make this semester if yuo can get this paper out or convince your prof or whatever.

Two papers is enough to graduate though, right? I mean, you don't plan to continue in academia.

A friend who was from a class or two before mine graduated this last summer. He had actually started work at the patent office 5 years ago, but just finished his thesis. He didn't have any papers though.

There was a guy whose advisor ran out of money and so he graduated at year 4. Most people graduated at year 6, or before.

I am a year ahead of you, so starting year 8. That is a long long time.

You had ~10 quit? Is that normal?

We had a couple quit, a couple basically fail (whether it is quit or fail is sometimes hard to determine), and one commit suicide.

Our class size was normalish (well large, but from what I can tell most classes are large) at ~50.

JM

KrazyHorse

I am leaving this semester for sure. That has been made clear between my advisor and me.

The paper I'm trying to kill will just end up being crappy. It will still be done. There are tons of crappy things to do in phenomenology. Some people make their careers out of doing 6 shitty phenomenology papers a year for decades on end.

I actually just had a reasonably clever idea which I think will make it less crappy. Here's hoping...

Either way, I'm busting my ass for no real reason because nobody is going to care about the quality of this other than my advisor.

We had 10 quit/fail. Most were within the first couple of years.

Graduation rates are close to 2/3 in general.

JM^3
30-09-2009, 08:40:02
Well, doing quality work is always good. And if it is a real contribution, even better.

I didn't realize the graduation rate was so low. I obviously didn't know everyone in a class of ~50.

we had people walk out while still doing their coursework/before being accepted into a lab

if I counted those, we probably had a pretty high dropout rate. They were domestic students, mostly. For some reason, the Chinese don't want to drop out and go home.
