Sounds like Vermont did a few things right.

Not going to read the article, but if this comment is true I'm not sure the criticism is completely founded:

You've mischaracterized the original article more than you purport the reporter mischaracterizes the situation.

If you bother to read the piece without a preconceived intent to attack the WSJ, you'll see that the reporter is making the point the you seem to be making. The article says that Vermont only mildly lagged the nation during the boom and didn't see the growth rates of boom states, but it also hasn't fallen off the cliff.

It features the stories of several individuals who were prevented from getting loans in VT who would have gotten mortgages in other states. And quotes all of them as being happy that the laws prevented them from getting a mortgage they couldn't afford.

The message of the piece is that there are sacrifices from tighter regulation, but in the long run people tend to be pretty happy they made those sacrifices.

It is. What else do the following passages mean?

"Now, by at least one measure, the state has the lowest foreclosure rate in the U.S. It came at a cost. The rules also kept some Vermonters like Ms. Todd from buying homes, keeping this rural corner of New England on the sidelines of the housing boom and the economic bonanza that came with it. Vermont's 10-year growth trails the national average."

"Vermonters didn't see the same sharp rise in home ownership that swept much of America in recent decades, which, despite the bust, buoyed economic growth. And while part of the increase in U.S. home ownership reflected excesses in lending and borrowing, some of it represented real progress in the form of more Americans achieving the cherished goal of getting -- and keeping -- a home of their own."

It's an awfully convoluted way of saying that a big fat real estate bubble that risked getting us into Great Depression 3 also had its good side, like people who can't afford a house getting one and some economic growth that is not sustainable and will depress the economic outlook for years.

More genius.

"Chris, will you do me a favor? Will you ask the President to show me his gift certificate — I mean, his — gift certificate — his birth certificate?"

That birther thing is so ludicrous, I can't believe it's gone on for so long. Nutjobs.

Another gem:

"From a ‘birther’ poll: 6% of Americans don’t think Hawaii’s a state, and 4% aren’t sure"

ps. the funniest comment is the guy saying Obama shouldn't release his birth certificate because of identity theft. at someone trying to open fake credit card accounts for Barack Obama.

It doesn’t matter if Hawaii is a state or not. Obama wasn’t born there. The Kenyans have already assured us that he was born in KENYA, and he is hiding his birth certificate. (a certification of live birth is NOT a b.c., they are 2 totally different documents.) He is a MUSLIM, by his own admission, and is making friends with our enemies. He is single-handedly destroying America at break-neck speed, and if we don’t get him out of office ASAP, our children and grandchildren will have NOTHING to call their own. It will all belong to the government. This man is fooling everyone. He even has his own people believing that he is going to pay their mortgage, utilities and even their grocery bills.

And let’s get ONE thing straight. This is NOT the first black president. He is NOT black. He is bi-racial. In fact, if you do the math, he is a higher percentage of caucasian than negroid (the proper terms). I hear him embracing his black roots constantly, but totally ignoring his white roots and the white grandparents that raised him and sent him to college. Even many dimocrats that I know (and some I don’t know) are having second thoughts about why they even elected him. We all know why he was elected, but the p.c. crowd will not admit to it.

Other countries are LAUGHING at us because they see he has pulled the wool over so many people’s eyes, to the extent that they are blind to everything he is doing/has done.

If/when he is found to be a fraud, and he will one day, there will be hell to pay.

No, we're laughing at the racist birther nutjobs.

He attended Harvard on a Foreign student scholarship. Need I say more. Why do you think he will not release his college records or birth certificate. He is not a US Citizen and when that is finally proven (and it will be) each and every person in congress should be removed from office for damagement of our constitution. Then we send every illegal home, and start all over. There will be a lot of wealthy people when we actually get to keep the money we earn. By rights, only about 1% of your check should be taken and thats for military defense, roads and border security. The rest of the taxation is illegal just like they are.

Our constitution will suffer terrible damagement, and stuff.

I'm sure these people could spend their time better ensuring they don't get access to universal healthcare to keep their infant mortality rates up and life expectancies down. That'd be better for everyone right?

Yeah, short life expectancies will solve the Social Security problem, too.

So no healthcare would be cheapest. Now there's an idea....

Summary: Socialist healthcare for african americans in Hawaii does damagement to the consitititution if you have no gift certificate. As simple as that.
