Hi guys - I've been working for about a week on a new forum style which I feel is less intrusive than the previous new one. Extraneous visual effects are kept to a bare minimum as is text information, and I've aimed to make it easy to read and browse without ugly interruptions.

Please critique the style for me and tell me what you like and what you don't. Also report any problems or bugs. If you end up liking it I might do a dark variant too.

Bug list:

Different collapse_tcat.gif image is missing.
Different collapse_thread.gif image is missing.

huh, did something change?

You can pick a different style (that I've jsut released) from the list in the bottom-right corner.

great job man

Nav

Nice can it be wider % of the screen, say 90%?

Scabrous Birdseed
05-06-2009, 17:02:56
If you want. I kinda prefer this width (75%), but if more people want me to go 90% I will.

Hey nav, maybe you could fix my one bug by just making a renamed copy of the collapse_generic button? One for collapse_thread too if you can, I thought I'd done that one but apparently not.

Can't for the life of me figure out why there are three (four?) different collapse images.

is it supposed to be white?

Scabrous Birdseed

You mean you can't see the fluorescent flashing pink?

I'm not using it though... Light works fine for me.

I don't like it. Dark default is much nicer.

It's a bit...erm...white isn't it?

Besides they say "Once you've gone black, you never go back"...although I don't think it was originally intended in this context :)

I'm not sure what to make of it? There are some changes I'm a little slower to accept than others, this is one of them. It's different.

is it supposed to be white?

AHHHH, my eyes!!!

Scabrous Birdseed
06-06-2009, 20:23:44
Okay, yes, I can make a dark variant in a matter of hours if you want. But for that to happen I'd need more substantial critiques of what works and doesn't work with this one.

mr_B
06-06-2009, 20:45:17
can you get rid off the " -s ?

mr_B
06-06-2009, 20:46:08
i mean ^^^^^^^^^^ those

Scabrous Birdseed
06-06-2009, 20:48:28
I could, I'm just afraid it will be confusing what post the the quote buttons and shit apply to.

Any ideas how to solve that visually?

mr_B
06-06-2009, 21:03:41
the word quote implies the "" so for me that's too much
you van seperate those options with anything you like p.a. a square.
I think it looks a bit messed up now and that's not good for your less=more layout

I like it. I'd use a dark variant.

Some minor points: the "jump to top" images are still the default blue, as is the "jump to quoted post" image. The black triangle you use for "jump to last post" in the thread listings is good.

I miss the box round the "posting rules" section at the bottom of pages.

The text in the "Post Reply" and "New Thread" images looks weird. The anti-aliasing maybe?

Same with the overpost buttons, but they're smaller, so it's not so noticeable. Maybe get rid of that text and leave the quotation marks as indication.

Good work Scabby - I'll use this one. I like the white version but, like Nav, I would prefer it to be wider.

I'm definitely fixing all the collapse buttons, there's a nest of those around. Also adding a grey box around the posting rules, great idea.

Will experiment with widths soon.

You could do something productive instead...get a job perhaps or set up a donkey sanctuary!

I really like it. If it was 90% I'd use it all the time.

Any chance of removing the line breaks between title and avatar and avatar and location field at the side of posts? I'm pretty sure they're new since the upgrade.

Scabrous Birdseed
14-06-2009, 20:17:53
I'll see what I can do about that one straight away.

Scabrous Birdseed
14-06-2009, 20:20:17
I have to say that looks a bit shit. I'm putting it back the way it was.

Scabrous Birdseed
14-06-2009, 21:13:32
The problem is that it's just a list of images in HTML, not anything positioned in CSS. I'm not sure I can independently set the distance between elements, unless I want to bugger around with line spacing and shit like that. If I just remove the line breaks it's too tight, I agree it's too loose right now but I'd ideally like half-line spaces between the image and the text. Is this what professionals use spacer gifs for?

Immortal Wombat
14-06-2009, 21:19:15
oh right. lame.

Immortal Wombat
14-06-2009, 21:24:24
I guess the correct way is to put the avatar in its own div class and give it some margins?

Scabrous Birdseed
15-06-2009, 09:11:29
Could be. I'm not sure I want to experiment with that while the style is public.

Funko
15-06-2009, 09:19:07
You can always make a copy of the style to experiment with.

I'm quite happy experimenting on the live style though. You do get very quick feedback. :cute:

It looks better though. :b:

(This white background has made me notice the black pixels on my avatar not moving properly, which, as I went to change it, made me notice that we can no longer upload animated avatars. )

It's very white...somewhat jarring after having the default black on for years and years...but that's my problem...this looks nice!

Greg W

I think it's just too white. Needs something to break it up IMHO. Like a light gray border for every post header. Or something.

Funko
17-06-2009, 08:23:52
I've switched to it a few times but it's just too narrow. Total waste of screen space.
