View Full Version : What to drink?

Money is tight since they've cut back hours at work in an effort to prevent lay offs (which will likely still come any way) and between the mortgage on my house, the girlfriend's house (she rents that out though which covers most of the cost), and her newish car (I still drive a beater just to save money), there isn't a lot left over. So what's an alcoholic to do?

Clearly, going to the pub is out as are clubs. American mass market beer is cheap but not so tasty so what is left? Maybe some trader Joe's Two Buck Chuck? I hear it is actually ok and that they import it from South America so the price is cheap even though the quality is acceptable. Any suggestions?

Get some Whiskey. There is some stuff that tastes OK chilled for 10$ a bottle.

I personally like whiskey roommtemperature, and so can't stand the stuff.

Whiskey or whisky. Yes.

Go for Scotch.

When I feel REALLY dirty, I'll go for Bourbon.

I went to the local Tesco's Fresh & Easy and just bought some of their Two Buck Chuck competitor which actually costs $2.99.

Still the Malbec is pretty good considering the price though they were sold of out a $3.99 bottle of Malbec which got 88 points from the Wine Spectator. I honestly didn't know you could get well ranked wine for under $4. I will try the bourbon suggestion next time since they didn't carry it at Fresh & Easy. They carry wine and beer but no hard liquor.

On the upside I don't have to work today so I guess I'll just drink all day.

2. sell the gf orrr make go live together.
3. single malt o/c

We do live together. That is why her house is rented. It's a really bad time to sell right now as housing prices are down about 40% from just 3 years ago. Will likely end up buying bourbon.

One bourbon. One scotch. One beer.

i.e. Two Buck Chuck: Stick to the chardonnay and the syrah. They do not disappoint for the price.

imho there is no such thing as a good cheap whiskey.

Yeah, but I built up a supply of liquor. It just hadn't occurred to me to use it until a month ago.

:hmm: HA! It is still a girly drink even if you use the right kind of raw cane liquor from South America. :p

Sorry to hear, Oerdin. I'm on 32 hour weeks myself.

If you're calling Ernest Hemingway's favourite tipple girly, we need to settle this man-to-man.

They're actually pretty small (not as big as a supermarket) and I only went there because it was closer to my house then Trader Joe's but a Trader Joe's is opening in two weeks about 3 blocks from my house.

They're trying to find places at least a half mile from a major super market and then they're shoe horning their stores in every where. They're being very aggressive about expansion in CA, AR, NV.

Honestly I think they'll get stomped by the competition but they're hoping that smaller stores which people shop at more frequently will help them get a toe in the US market. They certainly can't go toe to toe with the big established players and expect to win.

The Locals market is huge here, massive expansion opportunities for existing supermarket brands that have saturated the big shop market in a lot of areas. I think Tesco are trying to get a head start on the same niche in the US and it seems to be going ok. Apparently their supply chain mechanisms, developed for the UK market, work much better on that kind of scale in the US than the bigger US store groups.
