J/k Jon. Actually he might be pretty good. He's pretty laid back, which imo is a big plus.

Also, another CGer was also asked to mod the OT...

not only that, but two of the MeltdownMods (Locutus and Dale) have joined with Solver to leave and form their own Civ site. They even spammed about it in the Poly community form.

They have truly outdone Poly when it comes to asstacular design: http://www.weplayciv.com/

All indications are it'll be a heavy-handed moderated community. They call it a "peaceful OT". The three of them were part of the internal admin factions that wanted to permaban me to make peace on the site and take a heavy-handed approach to "OT trolls". They lost the battle, left with their ball...

Yeah, it seems like they're putting on a happy, united face with it all, but it looks like some serious shit has hit the fan somewhere along the line.

But banning the OT trolls? I think they liven up the place, otherwise the place would be rather dour nowadays (someone must have been handing out humour bypasses to many of the posters on there).

But anyway, no, it wasn't me who was offered (unless I have received an "offer I cannot refuse" in the past few hours  ), I honestly don't post there that often nowadays.

And finally, may I add the following:

Might I add that Cybershy is a giant douche?

He's deleting lots of my posts and sending me touchy feely Christian PMs about forgiveness, etc.

He wants to unban Dale. He would like to "talk to me about it first" even though he subsequently makes it clear that my opinion is not worth anything and won't sway his decision.

Nice try Laz but it seems CyberShy is just closing threads and not even trying to follow the sites own posted rules. I don't have much confidence that he'll solve poly's problems and in fact it seems like he'll piss a lot of people off.

You never know though he might just lose interest and then the forum won't go to hell and instead will just have benign neglect.

THAT should be the point of it. I agree, but I'm also fairly sure that that's where the trouble started. You end up with an on-topic of people who are interested in civ, and an off-topic in varying stages of caring less, and on poly, this led to the neglect of the on topic, which as Jon implies, is the bit which draws in new people. The OT can only ever cause the site as a whole to lose posters.

The tone of the OT is often times too hostile and mean-spirited. Tolerance is one thing, abdication or capitulation is entirely another.

Asher
03-05-2009, 01:38:00
Yes. I was an admin at SidGames.

But even then, never posted in the on-topic forums.

I actually was looking for Birth of the Federation sites online (remember that game?), and SidGames hosted a BOTF site that was godawful with basic HTML errors. I fixed the page and emailed Whistler (the webmaster) with the fixed HTML since it bothered me. He offered me a job, I took it. I began posting in the OTF and moderating some forums there, including the tech forums.

Then when we killed SidGames when bandwidth costs started exceeding ad revenue, I followed others from SidGames (St Leo et al) to Apolyton.

And now it looks like the Apolyton core is going to migrate again. Only question is where...

Not sure Counterglow is a good fit. Neither is WePlayCiv or CFC.

Sounds like a new site is in the works...

Christ man, the last thing we need is more splitting.

In one sense, increased oversight of the OT is needed--personal attacks really shouldn't be allowed. But other than that--"spam" threads, copycat threads, etc.--I think all bets are off.

My philosophy for being a Mod would be simple: don't be a douchebag. Poly is both overmodded and undermodded from that perspective.

Uhhh....that doesn't make any sense.

Why does having an off-topic lead to a neglect of the on-topic?

If Poly didn't have an OT I'd simply have left there ages ago (like, 2001)

I'm not forcing anybody in the On Topic to stop doing whatever they do.

Yep.

The neglect of the on-topic was obvious. Last news story in Civ4 was posted in July of 08.

Dan claimed each PolyCast took him 15+ hours to make, every week. That's time he could've spend posting news stories or generating/publicizing on topic content.

Again, your logic seems to be flawed.

The number of active posters on Poly at any one time (assuming you are at approximately steady-state) is the product of number of new posters attracted per unit time and average stay of new poster.

In my model, new people are drawn in by the on topic stuff. The off-topic increases the average stay of a new poster by enticing those who have gotten bored with civ stuff to stay and discuss other shit.

I agree that I shouldn't be allowed to go through the on topic fora and thrash the living daylights out of whoever I want. THAT might chase away new posters. But if they wander into the OT then they've ALREADY crossed the line into being held at poly by something other than Civ.

They have a vaguely active sports forum (~500 posts since Jan 1) and virtually no activity anywhere else (3 posts in a tech forum since Jan 1, no posts in any other forum in that timeframe)

KrazyHorse

Oops. Not quite true. Missed about 25 posts in a Battlestar Galactica thread in their film+TV+literature etc. forum

KrazyHorse
03-05-2009, 07:25:21
Hmmm. They also seem to have at least 13 fora which will not display without being logged in (5, 7, 8, 10, 67, 73, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 87, 92) (stopped my script after 100)

Several are probably administrative or reserved for future use. At least two (what they label FFZ and "the post office" on the front page) are obviously stuff they don't want outsiders to see.

FFZ is probably their OT

Still, I wonder how active it is.

Yes- I was already a regular at alpha.owo. I joined that for exactly the same reason.

I just can't understand why Poly provided an OT forum and always treated it as some kind of leper colony. Regulars are everything- if you want people to stay and become more involved, constantly having Aspergersy On-Topicers and staff telling them they're worthless scum isn't going to work.

NYE, what you seem to be claiming is that it is a common experience to:

1) Join poly due to on-topic
2) Post there for a while
3) Visit the off-topic
4) Have me do the DL dance or something
5) Get horribly offended
6) Decide that not only do you not like the OT, you now don't like Apolyton in general
7) Leave

That sounds like nonsense to me.

The fact is that it's the on topic which stopped getting NEW, ACTIVE POSTERS.

They failed in their job, not us.

And IW, if the mods are spending their time discussing the OT instead of doing content that is THEIR PROBLEM.

The OT basically fucking moderates itself. There's no reason to do anything except in the most egregious cases.

03-05-2009, 18:09:13
The problem is the OT does not moderate itself.

It is a significantly less freindly forum than this, which does function 99% by self-moderation.

You are right that Poly has other problems, but that does not mean that the tone of the OT is not one as well.

I will say that the OT has gotten a lot less friendly since I joined. It's vicious these days compared to many other places, though Paradox Games OT is a pit of evil and despair, that I checked out a couple times and said, fuck this.

I was on topic for at least a year before I even got curious about the rest of the site (I'm a slow developer). Then I moseyed over and have been in the thick of the action since, apart from a virtual permabanning for almost a year...

The basic prob with the OT is that some people just can't take what they hand out themselves, added to some extremely disproportionate modding (er, in the past, I guess) where favourites were allowed to get away with a lot more than mod targets.

Once you get unfair modding and people who can't take their own medicine - it gets ugly - and has been for quite a while now.

If OT didn't exist, I would have left Poly about 2001 as the reason I even started looking around was because I was getting bored of the site.

Personally I think the creationists will rapidly speed up poly's terminal decline and I couldn't care less about WPC as it's basically based on the premise that it's OK to issue death threats.

I don't deny your objection. The OnT parts of Poly have been withering.

Hmmm, where's that tubgirl link again?

No. I know he offered it to all of the senior staff (which includes me, since I've been a news editor/moderator/polycast co-host whatever for years), but none of us wanted to purchase it. I didn't even ask his asking price.

And I don't know about the losses, but I know they are there, and they aren't like a few dollars or anything.

Don't know about that; Columbia ain't cheap. I imagine the fact that I went to Nebraska for undergrad instead of Stanford is the only thing preventing me from surpassing you in loan debt.

Michigan is the most expensive public school in the country. Add undergrad plus med school loans, and I'd be shocked if you're anywhere near me in debt.

From the other site:
You know, I missed almost all of that drama, but it's clear that Dale was a euphemism, however he was provoked. I'm told the provokation was quite severe, but still.

The WePlayCiv posters were told Dale's provocation for his death threat was "quite severe"? Oh, christ, that's awesome. They have no shame to lie to their new posters.

Still cheaper than an Ivy (especially if you're in-state). Thank god I only have two years of Ivy-level education to pay for instead of 6...

That RobWorham guy is a douche.

He has the balls to talk about "common decency" when he's defending what Dale did? Not only what Dale did directly, but he also caused a schism which DIRECTLY lead to the creation of that site.

In effect, the "revolt" Dale created to form that site was far, far, far more severe than someone reminding people in the forums there that one of their new admins is a potential felon.

Also he has no idea how many OT revolts there have been. And usually things go back to normal afterwards. Definitely doesn't mess up the site!!

So... is Dale a liar? Or was it an "Apology" (ie, I'm sorry you suck).

Asher
04-05-2009, 03:35:33

Ugh... just found out today that Polycast is going to move from being hosted at Poly to being hosted at.... that's right... We Play Civ.

With the forums for the Polycast being there.

Grumble...

Though I wonder if that means it'll be far harder for them to ban me. That's interesting.

And I got DanQ to refrain from inviting Dale to a Polycast because I told Dan that I'd lay into him about the crap he pulled with Poly.

Asher
04-05-2009, 04:37:25
Huh?

DanQ owns Polycast, so DanQ is going to WePlayCiv?
