never ever heard about it before
what is it?

...well... wiki can tell me what
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Days_of_our_Lives
but HOW is it?
is it kinda like Guiding Light (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guiding_Light)?
Or Dallas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dallas_(TV_series)), or Dynasty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynasty_(TV_series))?
(never watched any of those either, but some of my friends/relatives did)

what do you think about it as a cultural reference in an online comic strip seen around the world?

apparently
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058796/releaseinfo#akas
it never got out here, nor in UK (?)
I like the norway aka title

It's nothing like Dallas or Dynasty, those are evening soaps with comparatively huge budgets and are written/shot/edited to a high professional standard. Days of Our Lives is an extreme low-budget production with the equivalent of entire episodes shot in a few hours, cheap acting talent, cheap sets, breakneck-speed writing. It's broadcast daily instead of once a week.

One peculiar feature of the show which makes it stand out from other daytime shows is the extremely driven dramaturgy, where everything is directed towards the production of cliffhangers. In practive, this means it's usually way more splintered than a Melrose Place or a Bold and the Beautiful, with extremely short scenes stacked on top of each other and several inteweaving storylines going on simultaneously. At it's most extreme, a short event can be dragged out for weeks in tiny ten-second snippets, consisting of a lead-in, a character uttering a single line, followed by a few seconds of a shot of the character's face with dramatic music playing. Then cut to somewhere else. It's actually quite fascinating, I can recommend it.
