Let's test it. Here's a video of a kid eating a Naga pepper.

Really? I laughed like a drain.

Tizzy

How does a drain laugh?

mr_B
17-02-2009, 12:27:40
jesjes really
I felt sorry for the guy, maybe that was because I ate some sambal oelek when I was a kid.
And when I was 4 I wiped my ass with paper tissues with Eucalyptus.
Found that not funny as well

But it made for great reminiscences at family parties, right?

"Hej! Rejmember when the lijttle one was runnjng around shouting that hijs bumhole was cold?"

mr_B

my bumhole was on fire.
I never ran faster in my life.
picture this: on a campsite during the holidays in belgium.....going to the toilet all by yourself.....that moment i felt like a real grown up going to the toilet all by myself....wipey wipey...... screaming kid going 120 mph from toilet to parents caravan.

Pain can be funny, but recently they've started showing on Swedish TV what's surely the nadir of pain-based humour: Max X (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximum_Exposure). It's totally turned me off the genre. It's like a second-rate Mondo movie as narrated by possibly the most annoying voice ever recorded. Or like a version of Americas Funniest Home Videos which covers deep human tragedy as if it were babies saying cute things.

Typical clip:

That dumb ass's pain was definitely funny.

 Poor G

accidentally getting even a little atomic balm on your balls is funny, too, just not at the time it happens or for the following 30 minutes you spend in the fetal position with tears streaming down your face, wishing you'd just hurry up and die already

find another way to treat your groin pulls

Heinlein not only thought that pain was funny, he believed that all humor was derived, in some way, from pain.

JM^3

I have sometimes thought that also :scared:

The Mad Monk

Are you scared of thinking like Heinlein, or just that thought in particular?

Thinking like Heinlein...

- darling, gotta have Time Enough for Love, first

There's apparently a radio show right now in Sweden where people are woken up over the telephone, then dumped live on air by their girlfriends/boyfriends. Is that funny?

Funko
23-02-2009, 14:51:38
No.

Scabrous Birdseed
23-02-2009, 17:03:20
But it's painful for the person concerned. Ergo, not inherently funny.

Funko
23-02-2009, 17:21:10
I think it's only really funny if there's no lasting damage done.

Lazarus and the Gimp
23-02-2009, 17:34:56
And if it's caused by the rank stupidity of the person in question.

protein
23-02-2009, 18:30:56
that video of the chav hooligan getting his leg bitten off by a concrete wall is funny. that's lasting damage.

what about people getting hit in the nuts by footballs etc. that's not caused by their own stupidity but it's definitely hilarious pain

they're not stupid but their nuts

The Darwin Awards might disagree.

Immortal Wombat

perhaps it is funny if either there is no lasting damage or the damage is caused by stupidity

protein
24-02-2009, 18:51:50
the less real it is, the funnier.

if you see a guy on youtube falling down a hole and banging his head it's funny. if that was in front of you and it was your dad it wouldn't be. unless you are a sociopathic mentalist.

is it funny when at the same time your lips curl up and your stomache shrinks?

you made that video funnier but for me (my truth) that video was disgusting
