i'm finding it hard to believe that's a real picture because it looks so much like a fantastical airbrush job.

No, if you mean it's what you would see with your own eyes if you were floating around out there.

Yes, if you mean nobody airbrushed anything.

It's "wavelength compressed", which means the infrared and ultraviolet bands were shifted into the visible range; it probably means the visible bands were also nudged over a bit to make room.
