Well bugger me.

If you cool rubidium gas to nearly -273 degrees C, two staggeringly weird things happen.

1- If you shine light into it, the light will stop. It slows the speed of light down to a standstil.

2- If you leave it in a beaker, it'll start climbing out of it.

Does this come up often in pension fund management?

Seriously, though, BECs are cool. I'm TAing the undergrad statistical mechanics course this semester. I think they're covered in Chap. 9 of Reif.

Though the cool superfluid properties are not covered IIRC

Can you keep these as pets? If it can climb out of a beaker, it's already more entertaining than a stick insect.

Don't know much about B.E.C. but I would like to get my hands on some aerogel. It would make a nice conversation piece if nothing else.

I have some aerogel in my office. It is just like you say, nice conversation piece.

supersmooth blocks of metal that tend to stick together?

KrazyHorse
03-11-2008, 03:30:37
Never heard about that. Is it suction or some more complicated surface effect?

complicated surface effect

I am not remembering what it is called right now either, but it is some property of shear? surfaces

The act of sticking together in the absence of any other rational explanation.

ummmm.... could it be about the Casimir effect?

It was the Joel-Brinkley Hypothesis, until that was disproven.

I have no idea what you are talking about.

Laz might be demonstrating the 100-nil theory, but I'll risk it.

One of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesn't belong.

No (good idea, but when objects come into physical contact this is overwhelmed by other forces).

Ah, I understand now.

Billy Joel is a twat, isn't he? He wrote those words for his wife- "Don't go changing just to please me. I love you just the way you are."

And then dumped her for a supermodel.

 I didn't realize that. His first mistake might have been marrying his buddy's ex-wife.

She dumped him. He never sang that song again after that iirc.

It's some sort of classic 50s science thing. I'm thinking Josephson, but of courrse that is different. Supercond junctions. I really don't know it...figured, you would school me.

I R lazy.
