View Full Version : Bump this thread when you do something really stupid.

Like get your entire hard drive erased.:o

Things learned:

1) Somethings you really shouldn't be cheap about.
2) You're anti-virus software is one of them.
3) When your license expires just pay the $50 for a new one and don't try to install a crack as cracks, especially for anti-virus software, are full of malware.
4) Reinstalling Windows sucks.
5) Losing 120 GB of digital music and movies sucks.
6) Trying to recover lost data sucks and takes forever and STILL isn't done.

OK, I know when I installed a new version of windows vista it said my previous version of windows would be backed up on my partition (D: Recovery). My question is how do I go about restoring that back up and then once it is restored how do I go about fixing it so that I can actually use it again? Alternatively is there a way to get my files/directories while keeping my existing clean copy of vista?

I have installed some software from ZD's website that says it recovers lost data and it has been scanning for about 2 hours and says it is only 10% done. :bored:

The problem is most of the files it has found so far look nothing like any file types I have ever seen before (schema.dat with a bunch of letters and numbers behind it). I'm completely lost at this point.

Backing up to DVD every now and then is a good thing. *nods*

Oerdin
21-09-2008, 02:59:42
That program is still scanning but it has found some 50,000 files it can restore. I have no idea what's in most of these files. For all I know one of them could be the virus that fucked me over to begin with.

So basically this thread should be the first one here at all times.

Greg W
21-09-2008, 05:01:34
I tried one of them programs once. Most of the stuff it found was completely useless. Ah well...

As for doing stupid things, I am not sure if shaving my goatee off was a stupid thing or not yet...

Oerdin
21-09-2008, 05:12:14
The first one was a complete waste of 9 hours. You have to individually highlight and click "restore for each file. Like I'm going to do that 50,000 times.

I've now downloaded "Recover my Files" which PC Magazine gave a editor's choice award but I'm rapidly coming to the realization that most of my data is gone. I don't care about the porn or the movies or even the games since those can be easily replaced but my large digital music collection includes a lot of rare and indie recordings which won't be so easy to replace. This fucking sucks.

Lesson learned back up, back up, and then back up again.

Oerdin
21-09-2008, 05:12:48
Oh, and it's probably going to take another 10-12 hours before I find out if this new program works better then the last.

Shaving off your goatee wasn't stupid, but shaving off the rest of your body hair was a questionable decision.

Oerdin
23-09-2008, 22:48:46
The clock says 51:56 minutes into the hard drive scan. The software claims they can recover files even if they were partially over written. It says it has found 563,651 OS related files and 179095 other files 24353 of which are mp3 files.

I'm not really sure what it is doing now but it says it has finished it's initial scan and now it is analyzing the file system fragments. This is taking forever. :(

Greg W
24-09-2008, 00:43:03
Yeah, restoring files ain't a quick process. Expect it to take muuuuuuuch longer.

Fuck me. I completed this near 72 hour recovery scan and clicked "save my files" and... It told me I had to buy the software for $49.95 if I wanted to recover any my files. I really wanted to at least recover my digital photo albums from Iraq and Kosovo so I did it and so far less then 5% of the recovered files are actually any good. 95% of it is just shit.

There are companies out there that charge thousands of dollars to recover data. You think a $50 program is gonna be worth anything? Your cheapness strikes again.

You should have used Knoppix or something after you got the virus to recover shit then just rebuilt. All that would have been free.

It turns out about 75% of it was junk instead of 95% and I did get most of my digital photos back though most of my music collection is gone. Still, I'm happy to get my digital pictures from the last decade back that was worth $50 in and of itself.
