If you had purchased 1000 of Northern Rock shares one year ago it would now be worth 4.95, with HBOS, earlier this week your 1000 would have been worth 16.50, 1000 invested in XL Leisure would now be worth less than 5, but if you bought 1000 worth of Tennents Lager one year ago, drank it all, then took the empty cans to an aluminium re-cycling plant, you would get 214.

So based on the above statistics the best current investment advice is to drink heavily and re-cycle!!!

Great but I can't believe that the scrap aluminium is worth 214...

So had a quick look for prices and saw that tennents cost 9 for a 12 pack at tescos(1). So 1000 would get you 1333 cans. So you would get 16p per can. Hmm seems to high to me!

So rough generous guestimate of a can's weight is 25g. So that's 33.3kg for all the cans. Found an online wiki site that said scrap aluminium was worth $1.12 a lb (2), so a few conversions and calculations later would value all the cans at 46.

Still better value than shares in a bank though!

My calculation was based on the value of the resold aluminium which was a bit quicker to do. Nav is right in priinciple.

Well I hope you can sell it for enough to cover the cost of treatment for serosis of the liver after drinking all that tennents!
