I'm off to Vegas to slum it in the Excalibur. Expect cheap buffets, 12 hour blackjack marathons, and consuming free drinks until I fall off the stool.

How do you know what goes on at an Oerdin's left forever party?

There were an unbelievable number of Australian students touring America and staying in Vegas this weekend. As remembered Excalibur was crappy with crappy rooms, crappy beds, crappy tables, and crappy everything else but they did at least comp me two tickets to the dinner show. Two of the four people I went with were unemployed so we mostly ended up slumming it off the strip at places like Ellis Island Casino where you can play $3 blackjack and still get free drinks. Their happy hour is also pretty good at the brewpub part of the casino with $0.50 locally made drafts which were surprisingly good.

I've gone to Vegas other times where we've eaten at really nice restaurants where the bill is over $200 a person but this time was about value, hoping to find the off menu specials which were actually fairly decent. Hard Rock Casino Las Vegas remains the place to see and try to pick up hot chicks in their 20's but that place is pretty expensive (normally $25 minimums) however my friend Tri ferreted out an awesome deal at Mr Lucky's Cafe in the Hard Rock where you get a 16 oz top sirloin, shrimp, mashed potatoes, garlic bread, mixed greens, and a salad for $7.77. It was 80% as good as the places selling steaks for $75 but cost 1/10 as much; I mean this was a really good cut of beef and even the shrimp were as long as my finger. That's a hell of a deal. To compare the $6.99 16 oz New York strip dinner at Terrible Tom's down right sucked while Ellis Island's $4.99 steak, eggs, potatoes with other stuff was fairly decent (Denny's quality but still only $5).

Oh, and the automatic card shuffling machine in Excalibur at the Blackjack table across from the table dancing girls can suck my balls. I have never seen the dealer draw 6 blackjacks in a row before.

Speaking of table dancing girls, the recession is obvious in Vegas. The casinos are half empty, the rooms were just $55 a night, every casino now has girls in bikinis either dancing on stages or poll dancing in the middle of the pit (that's a plus for me but the lady friend was not impressed nor was my friend's wife), and they're passing out comps much more freely to try to keep you in the casino.
