I'm so tempted to PM Oerdin examples that I know will really annoy Mr_G but I think I don't need to.

Mirales, a modest spanish architect, don't agree with this building being a bad example of modern architecture

It's a lead shot tower. Molten lead was dripped from the top into a pool of water at the bottom.

The Shot Tower, Bristol, England, from a tethered passenger balloon at 500 feet.
The original shot tower (it has now been demolished) was the first in the world, built in 1782 at Cheese Lane in central Bristol. The Bristol inventor of the technique of making shot said the tower was for "making small shot perfectly globular in form and without dimples, notches and imperfections which other shot hereto manufactured usually have on their surface”

It was demolished in 1968 for road widening and immediately replaced with the 140 foot concrete tower in the picture. Production of lead shot continued until 1995 but has now stopped, and the tower is gradually being surrounded by new offices, with an office at the very top of the tower.

I kind of like this tower because at least it's not just another box. Sure, it's only interesting to look at for about five seconds but that's five seconds longer then your typical high rise.

Freedom Tower (stupid name) is not an innovative building in any respect but it at least fits in half way decently with it's surroundings. Which is more then can be said for the ugly old WTC.

They were just to big boxes which were way, way bigger then everything around them. They were well built boxes but boxes none the less.

BTW about the Chinese media building, I do like how it frees up land on the ground for a park and I hear they'll have a big screen TV on the bottom (upside down) half which is kind of cool. Still the over all building looks like someone squatting to take a crap. His feet are turned inward and his ass is hanging over the park.

I also like the design of the new Transbay Transit Terminal in San Francisco. It'll be a transit center for bus, subway, and BART service in downtown San Francisco with an office tower for all the worthless government workers but a very nice public park on the roof of the transit center.

The worst architect critics are architects. I'm certain most of them have no sense of aesthetics.

Oerdin
25-08-2008, 21:39:01
The last one kind of looks like a dog turd standing up on end. It's not the look I'd go for but it is very different. ;)

Oerdin
25-08-2008, 22:13:54
This one is currently being built downtown and at least it is shaped a little differently but the problem is this shape seems to be what all the architects are doing now days in SoCal. It's like they're all trying to be different in the exact same way. The net result is a bunch of 40 story mixed use high rises that all look vaguely similar and kind of boring.

http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/1734/grigioweboj9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Those guys are going to get fucked too because sales are currently in the shitter due to the financial crisis.

Oerdin
25-08-2008, 22:20:38
I also hate how companies are cheap and try to reuse the same design in a half dozen different towns. They'll have the exact same 40 story condo high rise in Seattle, Portland, LA, San Diego, Vegas, and Phoenix. The exact same building just in a different location with no thought given to the neighborhood or how the building would promote inter action with its surroundings or anything else. That's just being cheap and lazy.

Oerdin
25-08-2008, 22:33:20
Yet another ugly 40 story mixed use (condos, hotel, a restaurant on top, and retail on the ground floor) building getting built here. It doesn't even look like a Lotus Flower so why the hell do they call it Lotus Tower? The thing just looks like a penis with a deformed head.
