Quad core nowadays.

It was a joke :)

Although, a week ago I didn't know any better. Been poking around looking at components for awhile now and it looks like I can get a significant upgrade for about 1500 dollars

that's why my company finally decided to upgrade my work PC to Dual Core last week

2.40GHz, 2GB Ram...

how shit is it placed nowadays for a work PC?
I'm totally outdated about current HW....

Depends what you are going to do with it. Mine's about that I guess. I think I have more RAM. It's fine.

Work PCs can be much shitter due to no gaems.

yep, its how we justified switching to having everyone issued a laptop at work - our standard office programs aren't that demanding

it also allows people that have work-at-home days a fewer headaches - previously they were issued a crap ready-to-be-surplused desktop system to haul home and keep there, now they can just undock at work and carry a better computer home to work on

I don't recognize a lot of the hardware out there anymore - never heard of a crossfire video card setup before today - sounds a lot like SLI.

Definitely going to invest in a fan that's not bundled with the processor this time around - the one I have now is loud.

People still buy desktops?

This people does.

I'm going to just go ahead and find out the hard way about the RAID thing. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work. I've lived this long without it.

I did go crazy and get a pair of Radeon 4870 video cards.

That's twice as good as my work PC.

Yeah, in my line of business everyone uses Macs, but I would say that's practically overpowered.
