After my previous dismal failure at posting this thread which still has me :drekkus: :clueless:

OMG. I guess Poly is useful for something. Just went there and discovered that CIV IV: Colonization (or colonisation for us that spelz propa) is being released sometime next month. Woot.

I still grab the original out and give it a play through every now and then. So much stuff I liked about that game, though I do remember collapsing economies annoying me somewhat. ;)

I don't have a drive that the discs for that fit in anymore. :)

Greg W

Me neither. Nor am I even sure the disks would work if I did. Always places to get hold of it though, and I figure that since I own a legit copy, they can't complain. :)

I had a java rewrite at one time that wasn't terrible.

Apparently (from memory) the release date here is Sept 26th.

And it's a half priced game to boot.

I'm a bit disappointed that there is only one starting position on the Western Hemisphere maps. In the old game there were four possible starting positions. Now, you can only start in the middle of the jungle :( .

Tizzy got this for her birthday. We started to play it a bit... I don't think I ever played the old Colonization so it's all a bit new.

It's very similar and the independence wars suck big time

"Very similar" seems to be what the 'fans' were after.

Pirates, Railroads, Civilization, Colonization.
Next: Gettysburg
or Solo Flight

I have yet to win a war of ndependence, this is not similar to the previous game. I'm currently trying to build all but one of my colonies inland and keeping only one port. That should at least take their navy out of the equation.

'poly tubby wisdom is suggesting max of 3 cities, or at least a v small number, but I'm actually struggling to understand most of the advice as I don't know the game well enough.

Bob

What's different about the old colonization is, that from the first move you have to think about the war. it's a bit annoying if you like to build.
No economic victory, no political victory: war is inevitable.

You do? Oh.

Bob

I don't. I play Far Cry 2 and kill everyone

I really don't know what I'm doing. Took me quite a long time to work out you could sell stuff in Europe. :gotit:

You should be ashamed.

Funko

Yep. That I never played the original.

There is a tutorial but the CivIV tutorial was so hellishly bad I couldn't bring myself to try it.

I didn't think it'd be as complicated or as different from Civ IV as it is. It seems everything I learnt in CivIV is wrong here. Expansion is bad, hardly any war early on, building is difficult, food is virtually non-existent.

I think I've basically worked it all out now but might start again. I keep discovering stuff that would have been useful to know from the start, like talking to the natives and that at least early on it's purely a trading game not a fighting game.

That's because the steeeenking french don't help this time.

Yeah, like the original it is a slightly unusual game. you start out trading, and building basically as a means of getting enough money/production to be able to effectively win a war.

Haven't played through to the independence war myself yet, as I am too buys playing EUIII: In Nomine!

There's a patch? Didn't think of that. :o

Bob

Don't know if there's a patch but food is quite important in that game

Well, food makes free settlers, who casn be sent to Indian villages for training into specialists. I tend to set up a wagon train to transport all my food to one central place so you get the citizen sooner.

Bob

You also need food to breed horses

Played a lan game yesterday night, multiplayer I like a lot, there is much more competition/wars between the european powers, a thing I miss in sp.
