as a producer is IMHO just terrible.

I listened to several examples yesterday, Parts from harrison's Cloud9, Macca's Flaming Pie and some of Petty's song.

Lynne doesn't have a feeling for the artist. That's the worst thing you can say of a producer. The first thoght that comes to my mind in "produced by Jeff Lynne", whoever the artist is.

Very obviously if you listen to Petty's "into the great wide open" and compare it to "wallflowers" (produced by Rick Rubin) album. Especially "Learnig to Fly" sounds like ELO.

The tricks are:

1. To add these clean chorus guitars (lots) flowting around with megacompressions.
2. Set up a 2-4-2-4-2-4-2-4 bash snare ("hold on tiiiiiight"....)
3. Pour in sparkling keyboard layers

No matter what the song is like, Lynne manages to kill it!

I wonder why people take him as a producer. Well, he's sucessful, or better: his albums as a producer are. Petty's Lynne albums were far more successful than the Rubin albums. maybe Rubin should drown songs in reverb ...

I have a lot of albums produced by Rick Rubin his production seems very subtle. You just hear the songs really.

Ant that's what a producer should do. Rubin did a great job with Petty and Cash, but on the other side he produced the top albums of the RHCP in a different manner.

You got to listen and to conclude. What is the band? What is the song? Becoming a part of the band, or better: becooming part of the spirit of the band.

What Lynne does is pouring the same old ELO sauce over every song.

Yeah, most of the stuff I've got of his is Rock/Alternative. Beastie Boys and RHCP are two, both very different. He also did the new System of a Down album which is brilliantly done.

I think the Beastie Boys produced by Lynne would be immense. :D

That one wouldn't be ludicrous enough to be funny. It'd just be really bad.

Yes I hate Jeff Lynne for everything he did to Tom Petty's albums, they are so over produced and have no hard edges.

I am so glad others feel this way.

Snapcase prays to him 3 times a day. In fact Snapcase was produced by Jeff Lynne (he should put it in his sig).

The Flaming Pie album is in fact one of the better Macca albums. It could have been OK if Lynne didn't kill some of the songs.

I really liked ELO. When I was 12 years old that is. I think I still might have an album somewhere. But when I discovered heavier music like Duran Duran I kind of lost track of Jeff Lynne.

And indeedy, Jefke does look a bit Bobbish. :D
