My mother died yesterday- I got the call from my father round about noon.

It was both expected and unexpected. I had been steeling myself for it for years, as Parkinson's Disease doesn't have happy endings. However her death came with no warning, and as a result we are having to deal with the business of post mortems and a possible Coroner's inquest. As a result, the funeral can't be planned yet- I may be a scarce sighting until this is all resolved.

Parkinson's Disease is a vile and pitiless condition. If you meet anyone campaigning against its research, punch them in the face for me.

I'm sorry to hear it, Laz. I watched my grand father wast away with Parkinson's and it is indeed a slow and sucky way to die. My heart goes out to you and your family. Best wishes in this difficult time.

for the last ten years stem cell research has been the most promising method for finding a cure but at least in the US progress was slowed because of the stem cell research ban.

A part of the brain stops making a compound called dopamine and the result it people lose their motor skills and slowly become unable to even move. The hope is you can engineer stem cells to regenerate the part of the brain which makes dopamine thus restoring people to full health. So far not much progress. :(

Thanks for the comments.

It's been a pain in the arse over the past few days. As she died unexpectedly at home, there was a post mortem, but it was unable to pinpoint a cause of death. That's delayed matters, but we finally got an interim death certificate today so that we can start funeral arrangements.

I'm finding that cracking wildly offensive jokes on the internet is really quite helpful, though I'm not sure many counsellors consider that to be an approved method of handling bereavement.

Feel free to crack some wildly inappropriate jokes here. We won't judge you...

Best of luck through this difficult time to you and your family.

Laz,

I purposely avoided responding earlier. I lost a good friend (a lot older than me) to Parkinson's. Crack away on the internet it is a good way of fighting back when there is not a lot else that can be done.

And these twats on here will either deserve it or appreciate it.

My condolences.
