See i don't know if there's a thread about The Wire because i can't use the search facility, but regardless i just wanted to say it's fucking awesome.

I just finished season 1 on dvd and season 2 is now winging its way to me.

After Dutch trip talk of The Wire and various other people saying it was great I bought Season 1 for Pete for his birthday. He says it's good having series of stuff to watch on downtime days when he's not on tour.

He said loads of people had raved to him about it, it was Dave Pirate's favourite show.

I'll have to try and borrow it off someone at some point.

Oh you have to. It's easily the best show on TV, ever - marvellous mix of gritty realism and grand urban myth-making, with a great ear for the streets.

It's good, but I struggle with the "realism" claims when the characters of Omar and Stringer Bell are roughly as realistic as the average supporting character from "The Wizard of Oz".

Yeah, that's what I like about it - It's realism mixed with the kind of grand myth fairytale archetypes that gives it all a slightly surrealistic touch. Jim McNulty is another totally improbable character.

Why do you have to overstate everything? The never ending drama is obnoxious.

That's an overstatement.

Well spotted.

Omar is brilliant though.

The Wire is very good, but it feels too smart, if that makes sense. It's no surprise, Homicide was a great show too.

Omar is a brilliant character, I'll grant you that. Just not a realistic one.

Oh, for Christ's sake.

Just as I'd got used to the more overtly ludicrous characters, they introduced Brother Mouzon.

If you haven't encountered him yet, he arrives in the latter half of season 2, and is a straight cross between a black take on Mr Blonde from Reservoir Dogs, and Little Lord Fauntleroy. Why do they do this shit? It spoils a good show. I'm half expecting the next big character arc to come from Porky Pig.

Uhhh...you do realize that the Nation of Islam types actually dress like that, right?

I see black men dressed like that every month handing out pamphlets (not to me, of course, because I'm a white devil).

By the way, the actor who plays Omar cut me off while driving a couple of years ago. I flipped him off before I realized who it was.

I also hung out and chatted with the actor who plays Officer Santangelo a year ago at a pre-Preakness street party. He was drunk off his ass and was trying to finagle his way into a 20 year-old's panties.

Yes, I did know they dress like that. It's nothing to do with the way he dresses. It's the way he acts.

It's also the stereotypical NoI manner of speech and behaviour.

I find Mouzon more believable than Omar (not that this prevented me from enjoying his performance).

By the way: classic Wire

Well there you go. Stereotypes- always a boon to realism and fully-developed character arcs. Next up- a teenager who can't get a date, but at night he takes up his secret alter-ego and fights crime!

Halfway through season 1. Very good so far.

Great town for a shootout

The Wire is bursting with fabulous characters - but the biggest star is the architecture, says Steve Rose

One show that has fabulous architecture is Prime Suspect, especially that "Final Act" episode that ran a couple of years ago.

The problem with The Wire is it makes other TV look shit.

Maybe that's other TV's problem.

Nah. I still prefer Battlestar Galactica. And the greatest TV show ever is still Edge of Darkness.

I bought my dad the BBC Edge of Darkness DVD(s?) for Christmas a few years ago. He loved it at the time, but found it pretty dated and hard going second time around. He still enjoyed the Clapton soundtrack though.

I've got the series and still watch it. The only thing that's dated is the clothes- the acting is still brilliant.

i also have it on dvd and haven't watched it yet

i seem to recall hearing recently a film version is in the works

Just finished season 2. Superb.

I have some sympathy for laz's comments about brother mouzon, but what's the problem with stringer? he's a great character, nothing unbelievable about him.

Lazarus and the Gimp

"Oh, excuse me. I must sneak away from my drug empire in order to hand in my Economics homework at the local college. A fact that every one of my close associates appears to be utterly unaware of."

They seem to be fairly well aware of it I think.

"Aight. Get some soldiers to win back those corners. I'd do it myself but I'm in detention."

Funko
26-08-2008, 10:44:55
I'm not sure I've ever seen Stringer Bell order anyone to take back a corner. He's the guy who gave corners away to get a better and cheaper package at the end of season 2.

Anyway, to the end of Season 3 I don't think I've not seen him do anything inconsistent within his character, but I don't want to spoil anything for those who haven't seen it.

Realistic is always a difficult claim in any drama but I don't find Stringer's character implausible.

King_Ghidra

barksdale knows about it. he explicitly says to bell when bell comes to him with the towers deal that (paraphrasing) 'this isn't about your business college shit, this is about the street'

Lazarus and the Gimp

Still not finding it plausible.

After a long hiatus, finished second half of season 3 over last week. Brilliant stuff. I thought s3 started very slowly but the way the plot threads and themes came together was superbly done. Still has the power to surprise and arguably the most thought-provoking season yet.

S4 and S5 both await on the dvd pile.

Season 4 is excellent, probably the best of what I've seen - it's the Kids' story.

Season 5 is really enjoyable, it even starts parodying itself, in a wire -like manner of course.
