Toronto to Calgary round trip, early July

Westjet: Airfare + surcharges + fees + taxes = $812
Air Canada: Airfare + surcharges + fees + taxes = $812

Even though their airfares and surcharges are different, they sum to the same total.

Nothing fishy here.

to find fishy lakes you have to go to Yellowknife or whatever

We need to pry open Canadian market. Let Southwest in.

How is Southwest any different than WestJet? Aside from bigger?

Asher
28-05-2008, 02:24:22
Having flown both a few times (WestJet quite a bit more) I'd think you have that a bit backwards.

What don't you like about WJ?

KrazyHorse
28-05-2008, 02:43:58
Their fares are way too high.

812 is ridiculous for TO-Calgary

I'm flying from Balt to Denver next week for 330 return. A couple of years ago I did Balt-Vegas for under 200 return

KrazyHorse
28-05-2008, 02:45:01
Last year I did Balt-Geneva and that was 1100 return (even that I found high).

The airfares are fucked all over Canada because there's no competition except WJ and AC. And WJ is almost always cheaper than AC but with way better service. AC sets some insanely high fare, WJ slightly undercuts, and AC still loses money...

I thought we were comparing airlines themselves rather than a competitive vs uncompetitive market.

Southwest's airplanes are comparatively quite old and their inflight entertainment really sucked last time I used them.

Asher
28-05-2008, 02:54:51
Looking at southwest.com...doing a NY (Long Island) to Denver route on the exact same dates as WJ as this is comparable distance (still slightly shorter than TO-CGY)

Cheapest I can get is $649. You add in shit like Toronto's landing fee (highest in the world) and it hits about $700.

Not too much different. If I take the cheapest timeslots on WJ like I did southwest, I come to $750 as well. (But I can't take those timeslots)

Edit: And SW's is via connection.

Drake Tungsten
28-05-2008, 02:58:54
You should pick another departing city and try it again. Southwest appears to fly out of Islip Airport on Long Island, which I've never even heard of. It's going to be abnormally expensive to fly out of an NYC area airport that's not JFK, LaGuardia or Newark.

Asher
28-05-2008, 03:00:17
Do they fly out of any of those airports?

Can you find two American cities 3,500km / 2150 miles apart that southwest flies to?

Drake Tungsten
28-05-2008, 03:02:32
I checked DC to Denver. Doesn't look much cheaper than your Canuck airlines and there's a layover in Chicago. Southwest sucks...

Asher
28-05-2008, 03:02:53
Here we go, Pittsburgh to Las Vegas. Almost exactly the same distance.

SW comes to $474.50 with the cheapest fare.

Asher
28-05-2008, 03:04:45
Earlier today I actually booked an all-prop plane flight with 6 connections to get from Toronto to Yellowknife. It ended up costing like $7000.

It was awesome. I should've saved the itinerary.

Drake Tungsten
28-05-2008, 03:05:28
United, on the other hand, will take you from LaGuardia to Denver nonstop in early July for $384 roundtrip. :b:

Asher
28-05-2008, 03:06:45
Is that including their fuel surcharge?

Drake Tungsten
28-05-2008, 03:08:00
Yes, as far as I can tell.

Asher
28-05-2008, 03:08:54
That's not too shabby.

What kind of plane? I like variety.

I almost booked on Air Canada instead of WJ if I could get an Embraer E-Jet. But those tickets were $1100 round trip...

They're trading at almost exactly 1:1

Or did you not think that maybe a Canadian living in the US, a Canadian who has previously lived in the US and an American dating a Canadian would realize that there are two separate currencies involved?

KrazyHorse
28-05-2008, 12:36:49
BWI LA return on some randomly chosen dates in July 417.50 including all charges (direct one way, 1 stop the other way)

BWI SEA same deal 479.50 one stop each way

FLL (Fort Lauderdale; only airport in Miami area available on SW) SEA 528.00

Note that for each of these I'm taking the shortest available flight relative to constraint that if flight is much more expensive than others then I don't pick it.

KrazyHorse
28-05-2008, 12:39:32
Airfares and cell phones are the two things I notice are much cheaper in the US than in Canada.

Conversely, electricity and fruits/vegetables are much more expensive in the US

I didn't think, it just happened before in this forum that Canadian and US posters went on pages and pages before realising that the hardware parts they were comparing had prices in different currencies.

at the time the Canadian Dollar was much cheaper, I didn't realise it almost gained parity now

so it's not the Euro getting stronger, it's indeed the USD which is very weak on its own.

But most important of all:
WHO's dating a Canadian????????????

http://www.theonion.com/content/infograph/american_to_charge_for_first

American Airlines announced that they would be charging $15 for a customer's first checked bag. What new revenue streams are the other airlines implementing?

United—$25 seatbelt rental fee for passengers who didn't bring their own

Midwest—$35 to sit in the passenger compartment

JetBlue—New fee structure for wait times on runway: $150 for under 2 hours, $75 for under 4 hours, etc.

Frontier Airlines—$20 penalty if passenger is not wearing coonskin cap

Continental—$100 reduced-fare tickets for standing-room-only passengers

Southwest—Ten bucks to touch the captain

Virgin—$30 fee for booking a flight with another carrier

Delta—$50 to chip in for gas
