Just thinking, the other day. How important first lines of songs are. They drag you into something, where otherwise you might not have gone. I'm wondering what classic first lines others here might observe.

For me, as a first pass, Billy Bragg from "Leroy Stubbs' Tears"

"With the money from her accident, she bought herself a mobile home"

"The natives are restless tonight, Sir"- New Model Army, "Spirit of the Falklands

after a hard day of nothing much at all"- The Replacements, "Here comes a regular"

Billy Joel wrote that line for his wife. Isn't that lovely?

Then he left her for a supermodel.

Neutral Milk Hotel have become inexplicably trendy recently, namedropped by loads of big bands and incredibly popular on sites like Pitchfork. (This (http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/feature/48552-interview-neutral-milk-hotel)is their third-most-read feature of all time, apparently.) Do you guys have any explanantion for this?

Neutral Milk Hotel are the new Joy Division. Who'd have thought it.

What are the specially interesting qualities in their music? It just seems very standard kinda anti-folkish twee indie to me. I'm still totally confused.

01-06-2008, 22:01:52
I don't know, I don't like their music at all.

They have personnel connections with a few hip bands at the moment (Of Montreal, A Hawk & A Hacksaw etc) so I guess that's why Pitchfork is into them.

Descent Into The Inferno - Scraping foetus off the wheel

I only know in the aeroplane and over the sea but i think it's incredible.

what sells it to me is the sincerity and passion in the singing (which pretty much pushes the singer beyond the capabilities of his own voice, but i find that endearing), the concept-y nature of the subjects and lyrics (some kind of holocaust/freakshow/love story), and the variety of the musical content.

i think it's a very unique and beautiful album
