"Skins" is a strange old beast. When I first saw the trailers, I though "This is going to be utter shit".

Then I watched it, and realised it was actually a lot cleverer that first impressions suggested. That was series 1.

Series 2? Christ on bike, this is dark stuff. It's like the writers have gone out of their way to turn what appeared to be a fluffy teenie-show into a relentlessly harrowing psychodrama. I'm hooked, but it's heavy going.

Yeah. Agree with all that. If it wasn't for some very positive previews I don't think I'd have watched it based on the trailers.

And series 2 is very dark indeed. It's almost like series 1 was the fun and series 2 is the consequences.

Last episode of this series next week and presumably we're going to get a funeral and an abortion to continue the dark side of this season.

I also wonder how they'll handle next series. Will we stick with the cast as they variously head off to university or catch up with a new lot of 16 year olds.

Skins is ace, and series two is some of the classiest, funniest, best shot, and most original English tv I can remember. People who dismiss it as some kind of Hollyoaks clone based on the ads are missing out. I don't think there will be a third series though, I reckon the writters are savvy enough not wear it out.

And series one was pretty dark too!

The internets say there's a new cast for season 3.

I think they might keep Effy in the new series, and I've heard that a couple of the 'old faces' will reappear. Which probably means Cassie.

I'm still really confused about how she managed to get to the US. She can't have much money, and there's no way she can flutter her eyelashes all the way to the plane.

She's probably my favourite character, so I hope so. Effy I mean.

And if Cassie was selling weed which she was, wouldn't take long to get 250 for a new york flight.

Good last episode. Very sad.

Last shot made me think we will be Effy centric next time.

It was a little sad, but I think the one where Chris went into hospital was sadder.

The last shot of Effy made her look too much like Tony, if that was the point, then yaay, but was a little disconcerting.

Yeah... it was bizarre I suddenly saw the family resemblance if that makes any sense.

they seem to have the same eyes and the same smile, all very odd

Having eyes and a smile is odd?

I never watched Skins in England but due to a favourable time slot here, I've caught the entire first and most of the second series (last two or three excepted).

I had originally dismissed the whole thing as some kind of late night Hollyoaks clone and the first series did little to change that opinion.

The start of the second series was much improved, mainly due to the darker elements that have been mentioned here. The episodes with Sketch and the death of Sid's dad were excellent. Tony's surreal Uni excursion was also a highlight.

Since then, the perceived need for the writers to provide each character with life shattering storylines by age 18 has totally lost my attention. It has become unneccesarily extreme in my opinion. The middle ground, between the juvenile first series and the shock-the-viewer (every second of every episode) feel of the latter second series was Skins' best.

Best show on UK TV. I download it over here as soon as they come out.

Props to Mad MikeH for name-dropping it on Poly, yo.

New series started today.

Really good fun episode, if a bit ludicrous. Effie FTW.

My cousin appeared for a fraction of a second in the "coming up on Skins" montage at the end. I think she was filming for a couple of weeks but dunno how much she is in it...

Awesome. Will download.

Is Shameless starting soon too? Those are my UK shows...

Completely different cast to last series, except for Effie and the dozy posh girl.

I've seen trailers for Shameless so it must be soon.

Yeah. 27th Jan.

Thoughts on the new series.

At the moment, some of the characters look cack. JJ and Pandora in particular are weak links.

Then again, the same was true at the start of series 1, but everything changed as the storylines started getting increasingly harsh.

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping. Apparently this weeks episode is a party episode so I'm not sure that'll tell us much either.

I have just watched Skins series one and two for the first time on 4oD having studiously avoided it due to the incredibly irritating ads, but after some nudging from friends I decided to give it a go. Fuck is it good. Really loved watching it; brilliant writing.

Also watched the start of series 3, having immediately finished 2. Have to say, it feels worse in pretty much everyway possible...

I'm reserving judgment until it starts dragging its characters down. Skins is only ever good when it's getting weird and sadistic.

Agreed.

True, so will I, it's just the contrast was very glaring going straight through series 1,2 and 3.

Crikey episode three was shit.

I just rewatched series 1 ep 1 - it's far superior to the first series three ep.

I thought it was a bit of an improvement.

Yes, I thought so too. Definitely on the way up.

I wish they hadn't introduced the ridiculous gangster.

Ok, I really enjoyed episode four - but more on track perhaps. :)

They did exactly the same thing in season 1 with Mad Twatter.

Episode 5, and it's really hitting its stride now. The emerging lead characters are starting to dominate the stories now, rather than the grotesques that make up the adult cast.

And they also had the line of the century so far-

"DON'T YOU DARE USE THE WORDS "CUNT" AND "OXFAM" IN THE SAME SENTENCE!!!"

Yeah, really enjoyed this weeks. And that line was brilliant.
