This newest series of South Park has been a bit shit I reckon. The first two episodes were just grim, and Canada on Strike was by no means a classic. I think they've forgotten they're supposed to be funny.

I agree that it has been off. I thought the Heavy Metal one was kinda ok though. This one was better than the first two at least, also. I didn't even pick up on the writer's strike lampooning. Thought they were lampooning themselves and their own internet content views. (I sometimes wonder if T&P are sarcastic self characterizations of M&T. They are clearly capable of self-referential negative remarks.)

If they were really lampooning the writers that is a bit rich coming from these guys who have so much of a different deal in terms of their compensation (greater control, doll sales, etc.)

My personal view is that content may "want to be free", but providers want to be paid. The argument about increased free provision driving paid sales is a strained one and seems to be made to justify piracy, rather than based on overwhelming case study and statistical proof. I think that there is an interesting insight all the way back in 1997 in BURN RATE about the evolution of "content" on the internet and that what the internet does well is provision of "chat" rather than well-prepared, written, edited content ala TV or books.

I kinda think these guys are getting a bit tired of the series and may wrap it up some time. There are some tell tale signs.
