How seriously is it taken where you live?

We had buffet dinner in a candle-rich restaurant with minimal lighting. Then we fell down a bit when we took the electric bus home and came home and turned on the lights five minutes before the end of the hour.

Probably a meaningless gesture, but I think I support the concept of earth hour anyway.

Started in Sydney (and Sydney alone last year), and we took it reasonably seriously. This year apparently 26 cities took part. Cool.

I feel a little guilty because I burnes 150 litres of fuel with my SUV today, just for fun!

But hey, let's dim the light for an hour!

I met someone like that. They had bought a big boat for deep sea fishing, had to always bring extra passengers to pay for the huge fuel bill, but hey, they reused their twist ties...

Never heard about it. Nice idea though.

Stupid, they should call it Prozac day.

It's about raising awareness. So if that's stupid, then so be it.

I hadn't heard of it until Google came up to a black page and curiosity got the best of me.

Raise awareness about what? That Global warming thing I never hear anyone talking about?

About how turning your lights and other appliances off will help. Obviously it hasn't gotten through to everyone, however.

Turn off your iron! It will save the planet!

If you turned off Al Gore's house we'd save a whole lot more.

Venom

And by turned off I mean drop a rock on it. From orbit.

How much energy would it take to power the spaceship to do that?

Thanks to carbon credits. None.

Earth hour is just a stupid gimmick. Turning off lights is impractical and potentially dangerous (when dark), better to have a 'Buy an energy saving lightbulb day' would probably save more power over time.

oh yes and then how much pollution was caused by all the candles...

wait for it...

It's about turning off lights that you are not using. So, yeah, no need to change a thing, move along, nothing to see here.

I've been turning off lights and stuff I'm not using since the 1970's "energy crisis".

Doesn't hurt to indoctrinate the kids to it early.

But then again, you want people to do it all the time by habit.

I keep reading in Computing that quite a few big companies are implementing power saving schemes were lights/computers etc are shut down automatically. Not so much for environmental reasons exactly but because if the company is big enough the savings on their energy bills by far outweigh the costs of putting the technology in place.

Brill. We could do the same in our homes by hiring cheap immigrant labour to turn off our lights and appliances after us.

Venom

Cost effective! I like it.

They can't afford lights.

That's the great dilema of immigrants. They're a burden on our society but they'll do the jobs no one else will dammit!

I turned all my lights off. It's pretty easy to see in the glow of my four computer screens.

We also need a "don't smoke" hour (it gives you cancer!) and a "don't beat your wife" hour (she might not like it).
