View Full Version : slooow, very slow Vista?

12-03-2008, 10:30:44
I just bought a top of the line Dell as my home desktop
all worked fine for the first ten days, then it all started to become very very slow... right now opening a web page takes a full minute, and closing it at least as much... can even play games anymore, it all freezes

I have Vista, 2 go Ram, the rest is top notch

I tried to make Vista lighter through Tweak6, disabling Aeron, stoping the automatic paging, all the tips I could find on the net... nothing...

My memory is apparently used always at 60 to 90%... even when no application run...

I suspected McAfee for some time, but I just can't believe it can slow down my machine to this extend

Any leads?

If you go to task manager you can look at processes and see what's using up all your RAM, might give you a clue.

that's the problem, the processes are all normal, no suspect activity, except at time svchost running 3 or 4 times (which related to Vista operations, impossible to know what exactly)

If you've only had it 10 days I'd contact Dell and see what they'll do about it.

You probably better clear your cache and temporary internet items folder first though...

is that the pedophile they nabbed because of pics on his computer?

calling Dell: what a brilliant idea!!!
unfortunately, you need to be in front of your home computer for that during working hours, and I am, well, working during working hours.

Dell has 24 hour tech support via text chat (at least in English).

Text chat is instantaneous. After the 50 minute queue to get a representative, of course.

Nods. Workshop in Mansfield. Laptop.

You would NOT BELIEVE THE SHIT they got over "intruding on his privacy", "Breach of integrity", "Lack of customer service", "Inoocent until proven guilty" etc etc etc.

Personally I think just sending the laptop back with a bomb onboard might have been an easier, quicker, cleaner result... then again, the wrong person might have opened it.

post mortem on Dell; got a stupid answer from them, went to by 2 Go of RAM more, now it works better...

morality, don't try Vista with less than 4Go of RAM

Well I've run it with 2Gb without any problems...

Works fine on my work laptop with 2GB also.

Mine ideally needs 4gb of ram, but mostly it seems to slow down because F-secure (once good - now crap) seems to want to keep scanning and scanning and scanning.

Worked fine on my laptop with 1 GB of RAM. Maybe if I'd had 4 GB, it wouldn't have been stolen.
