Bit if a lean year for music for me this year, but these stood out for me (and not just cos they're all Aussie bands):

Powderfinger - Dream Days at the Hotel Existance
Thirsty Merc - Slideshows
The John Butler Trio - Grand National

What about The Exploders : Easy and the Sun for the best Aussie album of the year?

I've never heard of the Exploders tbh. I know they didn't get any nominations at the ARIAs (Australian Record Industry Awards).

I've been singing their praises all year. Get with it, slowpoke.

I know, you and lots of other people. I was actually listening to it at a friends house at the weekend and I love Stuck Between Stations.

Will get it next month when I have money.

Interesting. So far we haven't agreed on absolutely anything.

Dre - The Trunk

I'm notoriously bad at discovering music at the time of release. I could name you a dozen good 2006 albums if you want.

This year's been shit for music for me. Disappointed with Interpol's "Our Love To Admire," Era Vulgaris by QOTSA, most Brit indie guitar based stuff and have got fed up with hearing about bloody Amy Winehouse.

Nile - Ithyphallic
Down - Over the Under
Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos

Yep. I reckoned Neon Bible too. Should have been on my list but I thought maybe it was getting too long.

24-01-2008, 15:36:47
Man....Neon Bible was a big disappointment after the Funeral album. It didn't suck, but it seemed to have lost edge and passion, much the same way Pixies started to go up their own ass in the studios.

Get the Hold Steady album. You'd love it.

24-01-2008, 22:44:40
I've said it before, but by liking The Hold Steady you're basically opting out of having any valid opinions about new music, and drifting into that dangerous "dad car music" no-taste zone.

You mark my words, by this time next year your'll be driving around to a soundtrack of The Hold Steady, Maroon 5, James Blunt, that new Take That album, and perhaps a bit of Coldplay.

It's a slippery slope...

Cock. The point at which the Replacements meets Husker Du is a glorious place, and they're in it. Likening it to James Blunt seems bizarre, but then I do notice that your avatar has no ears.

25-01-2008, 07:01:36
They are the album you buy your dad at christmas because he likes the single he heard on Radio 2. Like Automatic era REM or Counting Crowes or Tom Petty or The Eagles, they are pure AOR. The Replacements started out pretty good, but drifted squarely into this category too.

25-01-2008, 08:34:14
What in God's name are you talking about?!?
The Replacements never "drifted" into anything...they were pretty much "themselves" right on through...

And since I'm pushing 40, I notice my musical tastes have gotten more throwback, mellower. It'll happen to you too, probably!

Haha, loser!

25-01-2008, 09:12:26
The Hold Steady do look like a bunch of dads.

But they are very good. which is all that matters. Miles more interesting than the likes of Blunt or Coldplay both musically and lyrically.

Lupe Fiasco - The Cool

Before you right it off as shitty gangster rap; it's absolutely nothing of the sort. Lupe is a fantastic writer and he's even released a track called 'Dumb it Down' as many people think he should simplify his lyrics to sell more records. Listen to the album, you'll hear nothing about guns, cars or money. I can't recommend it enough. The guy is one of the best rappers I've ever heard, his flow is unbelievable and raps about everything metaphorically.

31-01-2008, 10:57:42
Ségo la Royale - Péter la rondelle
Nic Z - enfin Président
Blair Witch - into the desert
Gee W - Hey, I'm still here
Massive Gordon - the lost files
Angela la divine - fashion statement

I'm so sorry to confess I finally bought a Radiohead album. Ok computer...not that good. But in better news, I do like Wolfmother.

Gramercy Riffs
14-02-2008, 10:08:43
Daft Punk - Alive 2007
Vex'd - Degenerate (2005 but I only got it last year)

15-02-2008, 15:13:42
The Book of Knots - Traineater

at least it wasn't a 2007 album so you may be forgiven in a small part

See, now the 2007 entries start dropping in into my consciousness and I'll have a good set come this time next year probably.

This one is from Laz's home town, though I doubt he'd like it, it's happy "jump up" drum & bass.

TC - Evolution

Nills Lagerbaak
18-03-2008, 21:53:19
Ah! good call... TC is the shizzle :D
