Did anyone see "The Ring" on Channel 4 last night - Japanese Horror Film?
Oh my god, what an excellent scary film, fecking hell. Gave me the creeps anyway :nervous:

Nope, I was watching Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. I forgot how foxy that girl was.

CTHD - fantastic film.

Still - The Ring. I don't think I'll ever see a TV screen in quite the same way again. There's this horrible bit where what can only be described as your worst nightmare literally crawls out of the screen in to the living room. Hideous!

Venom in a tutu! ARGH!

Yeah, I saw it - a friend said it was the scariest thing she'd seen in years and recommended I watch it.
I have to say, I spent most of the film waiting to be scared senseless, and it didn't happen, until the last 10 minutes or so. That I agree was scary!!
Maybe because I didn't really think about what was happening. If you did that, I guess it would freak you out.

The commercial breaks did rather break the suspense, but, it was one of the scariest films I think I've ever seen. There's a sequel which is supposed to be very good too. And the last 10 mins, yikes

That's it. I'm meeting you, Noisy and Nav in New Zealand completely naked. Your nightmare will come true.

I think I've heard of 'The Ring' is there huge amounts of blood and violence in it. I'm sure it was some Japanese horror-film our English teracher recommended about 5 years ago.

FunkyFingers
08-05-2002, 12:36:55
There's no blood, there is little violence, but bugger me it's scary.
The Ring 2 might be more of a slasher movie I don't know, haven't seen it yet.

Hmmmmm.

Let me rephrase that. You do scare me.

Nav - have you watched The Ring yet? Scared? What did you think? Bloody freaky film this is, the most scary film I've ever watched.

I've heard all the Ring movies are very scary. I thought they were all gory too. I guess maybe that's only the second one.

FunkyFingers

The Ring 2 isn't what you'd call a slasher gore movie, they're all very powerful psychological creepy nightmare inducing scare-o fests.

I haven't seen The Ring 0 yet.

Yeah, it’s pretty creepy. The ending was appalling, but the script and acting were suitably variable in quality. I enjoyed being able to see a TV or door in most of the shots, with the director teasing you, knowing that you would expect something to happen. When nothing did, you felt even more unnerved.

Overall, it did a really good job of slowly building up tension and keeping you on edge, but just didn’t follow through with the conviction that required. Also, the relationship with her seemingly emotionless son was awful, absolutely appalling. Completely dragged the film down.

I gave it 7 at the IMDb. I give too many movies 7 or 8, and the movies I give 9 to are because I think they are under-appreciated, not because they deserved it (generally).

I thought the japanese one was kind of silly.
The remake was too.. but it had a cooler video =]

Sean, are you talking about the proper Japanese version or the Schmollywood remake?

Ted - are you nuts?

Mr. Cranky gave the remake the third most positive review that I've read from him (behind Good Burger and Girls Gone Wild: The Movie).

You know, a link would have been nice.

Also, browsing that site, I saw his reviews of Conspiracy Theory (far too kind) and The City of Lost Children (mildly amusing, but)…

Ignoring the rather disturbing ‘MIETTE IS HOT!!!!’ threads, the comments had a gem.

don't know where Kevin Costner comes off thinking he can make movies, but it's getting worse and worse! I mean, Last of the Mohicans was okay, but c'mon! You'd think he'd stop with _waterworld_, but nooooo. He moves on to _the postman_, and now...._City of Lost Children_?!?!?!

The Remake I have not yet seen, but I can't imagine how any Hollywood remake of what was a seminal Japanese Horror could match up to it. Happy to be proved wrong if it's an A1 quality film though, but the cynic in me predicts that it can't be.

Agree with Mr Cranky on Kevin Costner - he is an appalling "actor".

So, what you're saying is - there's no gore as such, just atmos?

FunkyFingers
10-12-2002, 12:50:18
If we're talking the proper Japanese version, there is no gore at all, it's all in the suggestion/direction.

Sean
10-12-2002, 13:03:46
Funky, I haven’t seen the reamek either. I can see how it could be fun, but I doubt it would be.

Also, have you seen The City of Lost Children (La Cité des Enfants Perdus)?

Well after all that hype over the Blair Witch Project I take this kind of stuff with a massive pinch of salt - that film was toss.

Last Jap film I saw was about a guy trying to become a machine - lots of shots of him cutting himself open and sticking bits of circuitry etc into his body. All in black and white with an annoying soundtrack - bollocks!

I'm watching the remake right at this moment.

Haven't seen the original yet ... but I'm downloading it.

Ring (the original Japanese version) has to be the scariest film I've seen yet. Yes, the last 10 mins by itself burns its way into your brain, but it's the psychological build up throughout the rest of the movie that really gives the ending its power.
The second film's good, but doesn't have quite the same visceral effect simply because after seeing the first you know what's happening, and you're expecting the kind of imagery that floored you in the previous installment.

I'm sceptical about the Hollywood remake, but I guess I'll give it a chance... if only so that I can authoratitively say that it's awful :D

For some reason the first .avi file of the original Japanese version didn't work, even with the latest DivX player. I'm now downloading another file (a few MBytes bigger), hoping it'll run this time.

That was Tetsuo: Iron Man, iirc

I saw [The] Ring recently, i think the hype from here dulled the scariness somewhat, but it is still very unsetling and strange. The much talked about scene at the end is fucking scary though
Bits of it came back to haunt me in the days that followed, i must admit :nervous:

My girlfriend just thought it was funny, but she is weird.

Anyone else watched Audution yet?
