My pc at home is a fairly good in hardware, but the software is very unstable. It has some pirated version of Windows, and I think some bad virusses. It's not hooked up on the internet right now, but if I start it up, it will start rumbling on and on.
Then after some time, I will get a message that I need to free up pc memory, because it's at 0 mb (I have 1 GB memory).

So I'm thinking about a new setup, and a switch to a open source operating system.

What OS would you suggest?

But most importantly: do my pc games (call of duty for instance) run on a open source OS?

Some open source OS say that games will run. I doubt that. You will waste a lot of time.

If it would be so easy, everyone would use it instead of Windows
