Toilet swearer faces prison
Wednesday, October 17, 2007

A woman in Pennsylvania is facing a possible 90 days in jail for swearing at her toilet.

The woman, Dawn Herb, was overheard by her neighbour as she yelled obscenities in the direction of her overflowing lavatory last Thursday.

The neighbour an off-duty police officer asked her to keep the noise down. When Herb carried on swearing at her toilet, the police turned up, and cited her for disorderly conduct.

This could see her facing up to 90 days jail, as well as a fine of $150 ($300).

Herb is baffled that her toilet-abusing has led to this: 'It doesn't make any sense. I was in my house. It's not like I was outside or drunk.'

She explained to local paper The Times-Tribune: 'The toilet was overflowing and leaking down into the kitchen and I was yelling (for my daughter) to get the mop.'

The American Civil Liberties Union has argued that the citation is a step too far. 'You can't prosecute somebody for swearing at a cop or a toilet,' said ACLU attorney Mary Catherine Roper.

I would have booked her just for having a name like Dawn Herb

You can be prosecuted for calling a cop's horse gay though.

Funnily enough I was just wondering whether you could get arrested for racially abusing a policeman's horse.

Don't call it a weathervane, though.

Quebec bans 'weathervane' insult
Wednesday, October 17, 2007

Yesterday In a bold move to protect the democratic process and stand up for the forces of justice, Quebec's legislature has banned its politicians from using the word 'weathervane', on the grounds that it is 'hurtful'.

The move to stop Quebecois politicians from calling each other 'weathervanes' was taken the legislature's speaker, Michel Bissonnet.

It was provoked after Premier Jean Charet referred to Opposition Leader Mario Dumont as the 'national weathervane'. This was in itself an escalation of previous comments Charet had made about Dumont, in which he merely described him as a weathervane, but not a national one.

The weathervane comment came in a full-blooded debate about infrastructure, news agency the Candian Press reports.

Speaker Bissonnet intervened and ruled that the weathervane remark was out of order, and demanded that Charet withdraw it. Charet responded by defending his right to call the leader of the opposition a weathervane, saying it was a fair comment.

But Bissonnet was unmoved, and insisted: 'I find that this is unparliamentary and hurtful.' So now Quebec's legislators can't call each other weathervanes.

It is not known what they will call each other instead.

it'd a good question, because as much as we all laughed at the original story, i wonder what we would have thought if he'd done that instead

although admittedly one element of the original story was the fairly common use of the word gay to mean crap/pathetic. which tends to muddle the sexual orientation discrimination element
