So 2nd edition was around for decades and everyone was perfectly* happy with it only for WotC to update the bloody thing three times in eight years?

*Not very

Morte
20-08-2007, 15:19:53
In the mean time while Call of Cthulu (The RPG of Champions) is on its 6th edition it is effectively the same game as originally published (they just add additional time periods / rule clarifications in each edition)

Imagine the duels at high noon.

You shoot Billy the Kid for 12 damage.
Billy the Kid shoots you fror 14 damage.
You shoot Billy the Kid for 12 damage.
Billy the Kid shoots you fror 14 damage.
You shoot Billy the Kid for 12 damage.
Billy the Kid shoots you fror 14 damage.
You shoot Billy the Kid for 12 damage.
Billy the Kid shoots you fror 14 damage.
You shoot Billy the Kid for 12 damage.
You take 440 damage from Billy the Kid's Shadow Word:Pain
Billy the Kid crits you fror 21 damage. You die.
Billy the Kid spits on you.
Billy the Kid humps your leg.
Billy the Kid says NO. Not going to happen.
Billy the Kid laughs at you.

the 1st edition Dungeon Master's guide was indeed a thing of beauty. it brilliantly evoked a fun and exciting atmopshere, opened up creative possibilities and ideas, it was awesome.

Wot? No Runequest (Chaosium) or Traveller players?

I have wanted to play traveller for some time, but haven't.

My list is very short though.

I remember reading a bunch of Runequest and Traveller adventures in White Dwarf, but never played or owned either.

I played the megatraveller game on the amiga, that was great.

The Stormbringer game was another one that looked quite fun, but never owned or played that either.

Morte
22-08-2007, 09:24:33
Stormbringer was quite fun, although most games devolved into a series of demon summonings and subsequent demon fights.

MDA
22-08-2007, 11:13:23
D&D Basic, Expert,
2nd Ed AD&D
Traveller and later some MegaTraveller
Star Frontiers
Boot Hill
MERP (horribly punishing combat ftl)
Twilight 2000 briefly,

There was a spy/Bond-type one too I played, and I can't remember the name, but it also had pretty unforgiving combat - I tried googling for it, but I didn't recognize anything.

I played a cartoon character one just once that was incredibly fun, and stupid - not really any character progression or anything, just cartoon characters pitted against one another with a whole ACME-style catalog of traps and gags, and some character special abilities

did Car Wars have any RP to it, or did I always just play while watching Mad Max movies?

Edit: googled more, think the spy one was actually called James Bond

I think the GM we were playing MERP with used a slightly simplified combat system. I'm not sure because IIRC we didn't get to see the rules much, just make the rolls.

He was very much a 'method' GM though.

If there were any tasks we were undertaking where our characters wouldn't know the results immediately, or what our chances of success should be he'd make them and we'd find out the results in due course.

Whenever we found letters or maps etc. he'd give them to us. We had a bag where we had to keep all our stuff in and if we lost it, he'd take it away... we couldn't draw maps or take notes unless our characters actually had some paper / charcoal / a pen or anything in our little bag. I seem to remember one time we fell in a river or something and all our papers got drenched so he dumped them in the sink.

I've only played a couple of Swedish-only pen and paper RPGs, Drakar och Demoner and Mutant. The former is a D&D ripoff though!

RPGs I have played:

GURPs
Based on DnD 3rd
Palladium/Rifts
DnD 3.5
DnD 1 (online)

I have been very interested in (And either looked up rules or bought or tried to start playing/etc) Call of Cthulu, Shadowrun, the Decipher LotR, Star Wars (D20 based), Traveller (Classic and D20 based), etc. I might get started playing again later this year... it is a fun thing to do with freinds. I wouldn't do it with non freinds though.

The only official world I have played in was Palladium.

JM
(I didn't start playing until senior year of college though, don't know if that makes me geekier or less geeky)

traveller was really cool, the problem with Runequest is you needed to study it to phD level before you could even roll up a character. It was far better to roll up a joint instead.

haha, that was the impression i got from the adventures they published in white dwarf, the character stats were immense
