I'm trying to figure out what my Job title is in English.

I'm a "redigerare" (literal translation: person who edits/editor) at a newspaper. My job consists of recieving text from reporters, then using DTP programs (either QuarkXPress or Adobe InDesign) to put the material on paper. I write the headlines (usually by width), pick the correct typography for various elements, lay out the articles and pictures, copyedit the text and make sure it's readable and correctly configured on the page according to a set of criteria but also aesthetically.

I've been using "subeditor" because I thought that was the term but recently I read that a subeditor is basically a copyeditor and nothing else. We don't have them in the business anymore, it's a fairly redundant post at small newspapers.

The other suggestion I've read is "news designer" but News Design, at least here, is something different. It involves setting the rules that I apply basically, picking typefaces to use, deciding on graphical elements and the number of columns and so on.

So what am I?

"Production editor" seems a fair fit, I guess.

you could say typesetter or pagemaker or outputter or sub editor if you want to feel more important.

Sounds like a layout designer. Not that I even know if that's a valid job description, or if I just plucked it outa my arse.

Sounds like you are doing both the jobs that were traditionally called sub-editor and typesetter. protein worked at a paper so what he said.
