View Full Version : Japanese vertical scrolling shooters...

I want to buy a Japanese vertical scrolling shooter for the PS2, but I don't really know what to get. Nothing special, just your standard power-ups/end of level bosses/impenetrable Japanese cut scenes etc. The more generic the better. I don't want anything that tries to innovative. Flashy graphics are a must (especially huge explosions).

Any ideas?

not sure what you can get on the ps2.

i'm thinking your best option might be to go the MAME/arcade emulator route, though if you're still a mac user i'm not sure how viable that is. i certainly have some stunning shooters of the type you're after on MAME.

basically i don't think the big name japanese shooters like Ikaruga are available on ps2. let me have a little check.

yeah to be honest, i don't think these games are available for UK ps2's.

a couple of ones i have on MAME are:

and i think these are probably exactly what you are looking for.

apparently there is a MAME version for mac so i would recommend getting that and then seeking out the roms.

I immediately thought of Ikaruga, but apparently that was just for the Dreamcast.

Yeah, I was looking at Ikaruga, looks amazing. You can get Dreamcast's on eBay for 15ish, so I may get one just to play that. Has it had an official UK release, or will I need to get a chipped Dreamcast?

i think it was jp only.

it actually got a uk release on the gamecube, so if you're really determined to play it then that might be the way to go, as a jp import copy of ikaruga will probably set you back considerably more than a second hand copy of the uk gamecube version.

How about this one?

Yeah, that looks pretty good. I can only see the NTSC-region version on eBay though.

I may go with Phil's GameCube idea, though I can only see the US release of Ikaruga on ebay, and that's like $60!

Looks like MAME's are the way forward.

yeah that would still be my recommended option. not least because you'll be bored of it in 5 mins

QFT. If you're not heavily into shoot-em-ups then fire up MAME for the occasional fix.

Unless you feel like shelling out 150 for Radiant Silvergun and a Sega Saturn. Sadly it isn't emulated to a good enough standard yet.
