How exactly does a chalk outline last for several thousand years in rainy old England? The theory that it is more modern in origin, supposedly to make fun of Oliver Cromwell who the owner of the property at the time hated, seems more logical. There must be some way to verify that the chalk outline existed further back in history.

Because they re-chalk it all the time.
