Currently I listen to SomaFM (http://somafm.com/) which is a nonprofit webcaster out of Berkley, California. Unfortunately due to a change in the US laws concerning royalty rates and who pays how much this station will likely be going off the air on the 15th of this month. In fact most small American stations will be going off the air.

In any event I'm looking for new stations to replace the ones being forced off the air by the RIAA. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Do you like classic rock all of the time?

Well, I need some good background listening at work and I've found the space age lounge channel on SomaFM to be excellent background material. It's got pace, works perfectly as incidental music and lacks distracting lyrics/discussions/ads.

Still, I'd like some more good suggestions too. Something towards the souly end of the spectrum or something a bit more, um, DJ storytelling if you know what I mean. Cleverly mixed material.

Here's my current listening selection, basically:

http://somafm.com/ (Ill. Street Lounge and Boot Liquour)
http://www.bongoradio.com/
http://www.thugzone.com/

I tend to use last.fm and (in the past) launchcast.

I've gone a bit crazy over the part few days, exploring and adding some 28 web-based station to my work iTunes. Including some right weird stuff, like a station doing discofox and dance versions of really bad german schlager.

Ones I can actually recommend:

http://kawaii-radio.net (which is just japanese incidental music, but picked by someone with taste and insight)
http://live.fm101.uz (it's a station playing Uzbek pop all day! What more can you ask? Well, a higher bitrate would be nice.)
http://www.r1live.de (Darkwave-goth-EBM-industrial. I'm not sure why I like this stuff, but it's very nice to work to, very doom-laden.)
http://www.activeradio.ro (24 hour manele channel - pick Radio Party rather than Radio Active.)
http://www.radioabf.net (ABF Underground = Minimal techno all day. A bit hard to work to I admit. The normal ABF channel is good too though.)
http://www.soulconnexion.com (Good rare groove soul channel.)
http://www.radiostaddenhaag.nl/ (Excellent and dutch, strange combination! 80s dance.)

Quite common here

It's strange to a swede because Swedish dansband (sonically fairly close to traditional 70s schlager) has made absolutely no attempt to change musically with the times. It's still all saxophones, guitars and keyboards.

I guess because the classic 70s Schlager has become quite camp here.

I'm, er, collecting them all now for use *later*. Yes. That's right.

Ah, that's OK then. The way I bought horrible 70s Krautprog CDs for scientific experiments.

It's not like I'm spending more time at work looking for cool radio stations than actually working, am I?

:nervous:

I've decided to do something productive with this obsession (for once) and do a "Top 25 web radio stations for the knowledge-hungry music fan" article for the site, I'll start writing tomorrow.
