is a 1.6 core 2 duo laptop roughly comparable to a 3ghz pentium 4 desktop in power?

is that how it works? two times 1.6?

I've got a 1.6 core duo laptop
but it's way way smaller than a 3ghz pentium 4 desktop.

hope this would help you proeteintje

What if you put the laptop on your desk? Or your desktop on your lap? What if I were you and you were me? Why am I coming over all Philip K Dick?

they are different types of chips, so the GHz means different things. You can't do 2x1.6 though. The Pentium 4 is a higher MHz chip, but is a worse chip, while the Core Duo is lower MHz, but better.

I would personally take the Core Duo, but I am not sure what the exchange is between them.

The Core Duo would definitely be faster/better at running multiple things at once.

I wouldn't buy a P4, I would, and did, buy a Core Duo.

JM^3 is currently the designated help nerd.

Counterglow protocol dictates that there must always be one logged in at any given time (rising to 3 at peak periods). Would you prefer daytime, evening, or weekend shifts?

You are suffering from Literaria Necrophilia, the most feared writing connected disease, other than Widdecombe Wanking, the compulsion to masturbate to computer manipulated images of a semi-naked thong and bowler hat wearing Ann Widdecombe stepping on blind kittens whilst shod in stilettoes, all the while rubbing oneself with the scrunched up endpapers of remaindered copies of her first, groundbreaking novel, 'Felching Edward Heath'.

The medium-length answer is, "generally not, but in some circumstances, yes"

I didn't know they made 1.6 GHz Core 2 Duos.

It's not that simple. Picture a car powered by a single, powerful engine (your desktop comp), and another automobile powered by two, smaller engines, one for each axle (your Core Duo).

In other words: it all depends on what you want to do with it.

SP: well, 1.66, but they do.

Whatever happened to the good old days when you could tell how good a chip was by its clock speed? Time was there was a nice, easily comparable number on every processor telling you how fast it was supposed to be, now you have no way of telling! It's extremely confusing.
