Is anyone going to play LOTRO? Anyone heard anything good or bad about it? I hear it is supposed to be casual and can be played solo or in a group. I also like the idea of the LOTR world and mythology (like any nerd fanboy should). The classes have also been said to be well done. All in all it's another hot key masher though.

my cowie played the beta and he said it was very wow cloneish, as you allude to. he's a big fan of the lotr universe but it didn't ring his bell.

I am pretty excited about it. People suggest that the Burglar is sort of a different class than what appears most places (isn't massive DPS). The LoreMaster is also sort of suppose to be somewhat different.

Solo/grind is suppose to make money, and group/quests is suppose to do XP.

I don't plan to play it for a while. And I am happy with casual as I don't want another EVE to keep me pulled in.

I've heard that it's just like WoW, only it sucks. More.

Then again, it was a third-handed opinion, so I wouldn't necessarily trust it to any large degree.

I played it in the open beta for a bit and I thought it was fun. However it didn't strike me as a game that I'd play for an extended amount of time. I suspect once the newness factor wears off, it doesn't have enough substance to keep people playing. I may pick it up purely for the first free month because I'm a bit burned out on WoW at the moment, but I don't see myself playing it much longer than that.

I'm not sure. Mainly because I just don't have the time for MMORPGs these days. If I were to play one, this one would be interesting just due to the world. Though the number of "Frrodo Bagggiiins" running around might annoy the crap out of me.

I quite like it.

I'd quite like to be FrodoBaggins672 and recreate the LOTR journey, apart from that im not into standard MMORPGs.

I'd love to be a uruk-hai and kick the collective asses of those 672 baggins out there.

The best part of the game is you can turn the boot armor graphics off, so you can see the hairy feet at all times.

The second best part is the /smoke animation, where they get high.

The third best part is you can farm pipeweed and make a fortune.

I'd love to be a lumberjack. Isn't it called "Lotto"?

If that is really the actual best part, then my informant doesn't seem far wrong. :cute:

I started this, and am currently a Hobbit Burglar in the server starting with an E.

Espera is my name. (level 9 currently)

I have been defeated once so far. I had to collect chickens to keep them from some wolves. Somehow I missed all the easy to get chickens on the outskirts and decided to go for the one in the center, I ended up with 2 wolves, a wolf leader, and a named wolf all on me... on the outskirts the chickens are guarded by a single wolf.

Well, there goes my level 10 without dying title.

I'm playing this on a free trial from Jon-boy. I have a level 5 human captain named Cwengifu on the Elendilmir server.

the whole red/yellow/blue/green combat buff combos thing is an interesting twist

Aelowen 25 minstrel on Elendimir. Look me up, I have a 16 champion too, but I forget his name (haven't played him since I started the minstrel).

Just started it last week, not bad, but I'm not MMORPG expert (that's my first)
got to lvl 10 champion...
I'm really enjoying the crafting part, building swords and mining ore is nicer than killing spiders

Update: I quit after the free trial - need to focus on finding work in RL. I believe JM^3 also quit and perhaps Havoc as well.

I have it, 32 guardian. Not quite sure how much i enjoy it, it has somethings better than WoW other things worse. See what the update brings I guess.

agree with lightblue - the ... deeds and other interesting extras you get for completing a list of objectives are a nice touch - wow is good tho, i think probably better overall

also, as hard as they tried to make this game look pretty, i can't help thinking guild wars was prettier. you can make an ok-looking tree out of a billion polygons, or you can make a good-looking tree out of a few thousand.

(edited for grammar :p)

I like the looks in LOTRO best

I'm a fan of WOWs appearance. It's not super realistic, but I can run it at max settings and still have great performance, and it still looks pretty good. It's a waste of processing power, IMO, using all of my GPU to make things look "real" when they could just make them look good for a lot smaller requirement on my GPU.

I have indeed quit LOTRO, and have gone back to WOW. All those connection issues/lag I was having with LOTRO, I haven't had any problems at all with WOW.

LOTRO just couldn't keep my attention that long. For some reason I just didn't have as much fun mashing buttons as I do in WOW. Maybe it has to do with the interface or the way actions look or response time. Just a multitude of things I guess.

WoW does atmosphere really well (not atmospheric effects - I'm thinking the way the game feels).

I heartily agree - I think WOW does a lot with a little, graphics-wise.

I have joined Asher in playing this, on Brandywine, for a few months at least.
