Sorry for taking this to our main babble forum, but as technoglow is pretty dead...

Our good old telco monopoly is still charging way too much for ADSL, and even more outrageously for a flat rate. Their tarifs suck rotting Mozart balls, to put it nicely. But unbundling or not, not much happening there.

But now one of the mobile phone providers has started a broadband offer that would cost 20 instead of the ~45 I pay now, with better conditions and - hardly surprising - mobility. From what I gather the tech is called HSDPA, and all it takes is a USB modem (type E 220, whatever that means) that should work with PC and laptop. The only weakspot for now is limited net coverage, but I don't really care about that. So it screems CHANGE.

Now for the resident nerds, anything I should look out for, problems or drawbacks of the tech? Any advice is greatly appreciated, because as a good lawyer I don't have a clue about that stuff. :D TIA.

Can't say I know a heck of a lot about the technology myself, but we have had wireless broadband here for a few years now. Companies like Unwired (http://www.unwired.com.au/) led the way. And now even our main telco has wireless broadband (http://my.bigpond.com/internetplans/broadband/wireless/about/). You may find something on how they work by searching the respective sites - I'm too lazy to do it myself. :D

HSPDA is the follow up from 3G. It's pretty fast and works fine, you just plug in the card into your laptop and go.

20 isn't much though, so there are probably some limitations. You should read the fine print, but as a lawyer, that's your expertise. :D

You should watch out for datalimits. You probably get a limited amount of free datatransfer for that 20, but everything over that limit might cost you way more than you're paying now.

Do you use this hsdpa thing?

As for the deal, that's ok. 20 buys 1 GB, which is about what I use. Beyond that free but only phone modem speed, or 5 per extra GB. Not great for the downloadfreaks (there's another model for them), but fine for me.

I have a 3g phone, hsdpa ready. But I don't quite know what the download speed difference is between the two.

20 sounds like a very good deal.

This thread is in a surreal alternative universe where Drekkus is giving tech tips.

Well, I guess "Drekkus giving tech tips" and "Dyl is told to read the fine print" is somehow related, so it's not that scary. Still...

My parents have it (circa 9 euros a month for weekend/evening access only) and it seems to be working fine.

we had an offer here for wireless ADSL (???), where Totti was hired for the commercial.

He's also the target for loads of jokes here for his thickness, so much that 3 "Totti jokes" books have been published.

Later on Gattuso (another fine intellectual) was hired too to act as Totti's sidekick.

They both visit this hot blonde to deliver her the wireless equipment she just subscribed,
and Gattuso boasts: "Go figure: 20 Megs per second!!!!!"
Then Totti: "That MUCH for the second??? I wonder what the first gets!!!!!"

for most of them, you need to understand roman dialect
