You know you want to do it.

Oerdin

Example: You know you want to means that you want to do it.

A clear PH.

Except the hilarious thing is that there's actually no joke to explain to begin with!

MoSe
06-02-2007, 09:04:39
plus, the joke has to be subtle

Funko
06-02-2007, 09:07:36
No, it really doesn't. In fact the less subtle it is the worse/better the PHd.

MoSe
06-02-2007, 09:16:02
OK, it would be funnier because more awkward, but it would have less spoiling value...
when did you change the original definition anyway?

Funko
06-02-2007, 09:23:22
I didn't.

MoSe
06-02-2007, 09:42:45
who did?

Funko

No-one, when did Provost ever constrain himself to explaining subtle jokes?

yeah, that's the original definition

But it was me who then coined the shorthand form PHd and proposed it for the glossary (http://www.counterglow.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&postid=591186&highlight=Provost+Harrisoned#post591186) entry.

Of course I had in mind a subtle joke between PhD and PHd
:cute: :o

Actually, PH himself missed from the start the point that the spoilt joke was subtle, not obvious....

Someone posts a subtle joke someone else sees that as only a potential joke and so tries to make a more explicit joke out of it but fails because everyone else (except Drekkus) already saw the humour in the subtle post. That's a PH'd and it's an attempt to be funny, that's unsuccessful.

All threads on CG are successful - even the unsuccessful ones!

Oerdin

You figure even the worst thread would get one or to responses from Mr G.

MOBIUS

Are we sure we want to judge the best threads on CG by how often mr_G has posted in them?

Provost Harrison
07-02-2007, 00:59:51
Well surely that would put the shorter threads at a disadvantage, even if MrG has exclusively posted in them. Some of the longer threads could have hundreds of his threads in, thus, I think the determination should be based upon the percentage of MrG posts in a thread as a pure number of posts, in and of itself, would lead to a misinterpretation of the greatness of said thread. Also I think the contributions of other posters should be brought into mind who are probably not such a damning indictment on a thread but may cause it a great disfavour, such as Oerdin or Drekkus, who I am fairly positive would have a consistently detrimental effect on any thread...

Nav, I think someone is lobbying to introduce here too the thread rating system some other site has (had?), you know, the stars system...

MoSe
07-02-2007, 08:43:50
and while your'e at it, you could also throw in a poster rating system...
