View Full Version : Things that really shake your confidence

Dec 27th I was driving a bus at Beecroft. Pulled in front of another bus (which was parked where I was supposed to be) and reversed back a bit. Wandered down the back of the bus to check how far away I was, and decided I needed to go back more. So, back in the seat, reverse back some more.

So, open cabin door and get out of seat to check how far there is now, and notice bus is rolling back. Fuck! Jump accross seat and jam handbrake on, wondering how it could have come off. Unfortunately before the bus could completely stop it hit the bus behind it, shattering the rear window and denting the bumper bar.

So, fast forward a few days, and the accident investigators are out checking the bus out. Turns out the handbrake is faulty, as is the alarm that is supposed to go off if the cabin door is open and the handbrake is not on. Watch the video footage (which is very grainy), and both the union guy and I are sure that it shows me putting the handbrake on. Phew, all seems to be okay, must have been due to the faulty handbrake.

Fast forward to today and I am told by the union rep that they have now viewed the video on a better screen, and it clearly shows me not putting the handbrake on.

:(

So, meeting tomorrow to discuss all this apparently. The Union reckons they're going to go the line of the bus being defective, and thus it shouldn't have been out on the road. Management are no doubt going to go the line of me not putting the handbrake on anyway.

So, what shall happen to me? Buggered if I know. But I'm sure it won't be good. As is I am in enough of an emotional mess that I had to chuck my second half in. It is the first time I have ever not put the handbrake on, but this has stuffed me around.

wtf, making a mistake is normal isn't.
So you forgot to put the break on, wich would turn on a alarm wich aparently is broke.
The alarm should make a big doooo di doooo noise so you could react on that and put on the handbreak.
so in my not so humble opinion there is nothing they can hang you for.
If they try to put you down then just kick'm in the balls seriously serious.
If not i would fly ovah and do the kicking for free, maybe you could give Venom the coordinations so he could NUKE'm........ not for free i suppose.

good luck down under boytje, put on your kickin' bootzzz

What mr_G says.

Plus, if that other bus hadn't been in your parking space none of this would have happened in the first place.

Though paradoxically it was probably lucky ( that the faulty handbrake was spotted on such a minor incident and not something more serious...

Bottom line is that you were driving an unroadworthy bus - most likely the accident would never have happened if it had warned you as it should.

Good Luck!

what puzzles me, is HOW a grainy footage could have made you think the first time around that you had pulled the handbrake if that's not what happened....
you brought your hand there but forgot to grip/pull the lever?????
did they let you re-examine the footage as they had let you already on the low-res monitor?

mr_G
09-01-2007, 10:00:08
that's not the only thing that puzzles you MoSe......... don't forget that.

Greg W
09-01-2007, 10:07:05
I haven't viewed the footage on the new monitor, though I will see it tomorrow. How it could have looked so different I am not sure, however even the Operations Manager thought that I had applied it after viewing the footage multiple times on the grainy monitor. I guess I won't know until I see it, but the Union guy wouldn't have told me it if it weren't true.

I am feeling a little better now, I was quite shaken before.

Thanks for the well wishes. :)

they'll have to get a bunch of lawyers together to see what EXACT percentage of the blame you bear Greg, it'll take about 5 years to decide

if it comes out to more than 50% your fault, you get kicked in the balls

Oddly enough, in Maryland, if the fault isn't 100% anyone's, its not one's fault at all. The insurance companies love it. Its an old law we brought over from England - think it was originally used by the wealthy to avoid blame when they ran down peasants with their horses. Its partially the peasant's fault for being in the road, so no blame.

but I hope it works out OK for you, a broken window is hardly the end of the world, and as you say, you've never done this before :)

Fistandantilus
10-01-2007, 21:01:29
Ok, this may sound stupid but isn't there an insurance that covers these types of accidents?

DaShi
11-01-2007, 02:45:45
Well, he's not back yet. I guess it's safe to assume that he's dead. You will be missed Greg. :(

Greg W
11-01-2007, 08:43:20
Ta da! I'm back from the dead.

Yes there is Fist, but the company is self insured. I think that means they basically don't get insurance, they just pay for stuff themselves.

Anyways, seems a few interesting points have come out of this:
- they fitted the warning alarm to the drivers cabin door precisely to stop this kind of accident
- the crash investigation unit from my work stated that every depot was to have all staff trained in how these operate, and presumably the need to make sure they're working before the driver takes a bus out
- not a single person form my depot that I asked today, including some trainers said they had ever been trained to check it to make sure it works
- so, me and the union think we can get them on the training thing. Basically they failed to trian me properly, cos if I had've been trained properly, I would have checked it, and this never would have happened
- the operations manager confided to the Union Rep that they weren't out to hang me anyway, as they know I am a nice guy (shows how little they know - and also a question of just how much to believe it)

And MDA, the issue is not so much the broken mirror, it's runaway busses. It's a big issue in State Transit right now, especially aftera driver got killed walking in front of his own bus that he had left the handbrake off a few years ago now.

So...

Summary
I think I'll be ok
