How have this band eluded me for 11 years? Well twelve now.

They are my band of the moment (my moment) in spite of the fact that they've been on an indefinite hiatus for a couple of years while Tod Ashley's been teaching and experiencing the joys of the far east. A band has not struck me as profoundly for a long while. Nothing's been on my playlist as constantly since Fugazi's The Argument, though there is little similar in the two forms of music.

All this is doubly astounding to me as I was/am a big fan of Cop Shoot Cop, Tod A's band before Firewater.

Firewater are a traditional rock band with circus music, jazz and Russian/Romany folk elements thrown in, Foetusesque leanings and cleverly dark lyrical themes, all wrapped up in more than a passing homage to Tom Waits. A "wedding band gone wrong" is how Tod A described them.

Anyway. This is a recommendation from me to all those of you who might like the same things as me, which admittedly is probably scant few of you. Check out "Man on the Burning Tightrope" and "The Ponzi Scheme" for starters.

Any fans already? If so, why didn't you tell me sooner?
