Name your top 5 in order, and if people play nice, i'll add up all the votes and do something with it. Alternatively just say what games you most enjoyed this year and stick your thumb up your ass.

In order:

1. The Elder Scrolls 3: Oblivion (360)
2. City of Villains (PC)
3. PES6 (PS2)
4. Dr Kawashima's Brain Training (DS)
5. Test Drive Unlimited (360)

1. Oblivion

the only game that was able to tear me away from WoW for any length of time

What I saw of Civ 4 I liked, but I didn't play long.

1. Gears of War
2. Civ 4
3. F.E.A.R
4. Worldwide Soccer Manager

Gears of War by a mile, but I haven't played Oblivion yet and I'm looking forward to it.

This is limited to games that came out this year, right? That leaves me with

1. New Super Mario Bros. (DS)
2. Civilization IV: Warlords (PC)

I have also been playing Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones and Icewind Dale II.

Civ 4 was good. As was EVE Red Moon Rising and Revelations. I think that there were lots of other good games also...

I actually havnt played much this year and what I have was out last year.

Unless you can count EVE (as its had a major revamp in the last year) then I guess the only thing I can vote for is Half life episode 1 as I've only really played BF2, EVE and RTW:RTR this year (My current PC wont cope with oblivion or MTW2 and I'm not going to be in a position to upgrade until after christmas (when I'm planning the mother of all entertainment PCs - complete with a projector for a full on big screen gaming experience.)

Of the two new games I played this year, Civ4 was the most interesting. Oblivion wasn't to my liking at all - a real yawnfest after a surprisingly short amount of time. It drove me back to WoW after a few weeks break.

1. Oblivion

Best SP RPG I have seen in years

2. Civ 4

They FINALLY did a good game, after that civ 3 crap nearly killed it

3. Galatic Civ 2

Still fun to play, but a lot of rough edges

4. MTW 2

Some problems but a solid sequel to RTW

5. Caesar 4

Decent city builder rounds out an average year

apart from you raving it about it, i've seen a lot of 'meh' reviews

from The Guardian Gamesblog:

Stinker of the year

Gears of War (Microsoft, Xbox 360)
Not the worst game of the year by any means - Superman Returns probably takes that accolade - but as the game supposed to herald phase two of the next generation Gears fell way short. Comic book plot, musclebound heroes, shooting alien stuff - yes this was the same old teen schtick that some of us had hoped gaming had grown out of. Sure, Gears was good to look at and fun enough to play in short doses, but considering what it was hyped up to be Gears of War offered little more than bluster and cliché. Roll on Alan Wake.

as a matter of interest, the above reviewer went with:

the new Zelda
Oblivion
Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training
Shadow of the Colossus
Psychonauts

as their picks. Other Guardian reviwer's picks here:

This (http://www.gameguru.in/action/2006/23/gears-of-war-pc-version-claims-rubbished-by-microsoft/) is the reason on my part :D

Besides, I'm awaiting the official thread to cast my vote.

That Guardian reviewer is flat out wrong about Gears of War, and has obviously not played it Co-op or online.

All I've played are GoW, Oblivion and Civ IV. I got bored with Civ IV after a couple nights, but it was pretty good. I'm still going through Oblivion, and I still enjoy it a lot. Gears of War is excellent.

Oblivion far and above the others.

Guild wars for thier 2 releases, each alone is good, but 2 in a year of that quality.

Gal Civ 2. Would list Civ4, but this overshadows it.

Maybe M2TW, alone its a good game, but not too revolutionary from RTW. The unpacker is out though so assuming the devs were honest about the ability to mod, M2TR may go up there with oblivion when its done.

Worst

1- NWN2. Huge fucking disapointment. Glad I didn't buy it.

2- Sims 2 Pets- At least the 12 year old retards are happy now. Well, and the furries, pedophiles, and beastialists. Hopefully they will move on to a decent expansion. It also heralded the end of Maxis. Their logo no longer appears on their games. They are now EA.

3- The movies. Molyneaux fucks more people in the ass!

4- Gears of War. Same old same old. New eye candy. Same game as every other on the market, just this one costs a lot more to get the 360 to play. Online play is nothing new either.

5- The new Civ game no one heard about. Civ:Rome. Why did no one hear about it? DAMN WAS IT BAD!

I've only really played Football Manager and Civ 4, as well as a couple of multiplayer thingies which are in general not from last year, I think. I'm a bit of a lousy gaming nerd I guess.

CIV4 was good.
I get lonely playing Oblivion, a huge world and no "real" people to interact with.
I thought EVE was one of the most original games I've played all year, even if it isn't new this year.
Wow still holds my interest, which is more than I can say for any other MMO on the market right now.
The Godfather went against the stereotype of movie games sucking.
I don't have a Wii yet, but I imagine I may like some of those games.

Edit: GalCiv II was much better than the first one, and I think we can expect good things from Stardock in the future. (Let's hope they don't turn the next iteration into MOO3).

The only game I purchased that disappointed me was ROL, which after RON i thought would be fantastic, but the gameplay was mediocre at best.

I also got around to playing Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic this year thanks to Mon Jiller. I really enjoyed this one, which for me is a big deal, because I don't like playing games that have been out for 2 years or more that aren't MMOs.

My post doesn't have much in terms of recent games, I'm afraid, since my playstyle tends toward playing (and buying) older games and staying on the same game for a long time.

I'm playing WOW right now mostly. It doesn't count because it is older, but it sure is well put together.

Resident Evil 4 is a great game. I think it is from last year, though. The PS2 version might be from this year. I think it may be the best video game I've ever played.

God of War is good. Also not sure when it came out.

When did We Love Katamari come out? I actually like the original a bit better, but this one's pretty good, with more stuff to do.

I wonder if a Ratchet and Clank game came out this year. Those are great.

Oh, Dance Dance Revolution probably had a version that came out this year. I really enjoy that game.

I haven't picked up the Guild Wars expansions yet, but I really enjoyed the original, so when my interest dies down a bit in WOW I'll probably pick the expansions up. I'd recommend the original game to anyone based on the variety of missions you can do in the PVE part, and if you're into PVP, it may be the best for that (I have almost 0 experience with the PVP, since I tend not to do PVP in any of these games, for some reason).

Maybe EVE is good for PVP, but since I don't PVP generally, I found the actual playing of the game to be a bit on the boring side. It is a great simulation of a space economy with lots of stuff to do; I just don't find most of the things I tried very fun. The social aspect kept me coming back for a long time, though, as well as getting bigger and better ships and fitting them out. If combat were more immersive, I'd like this one better.

Yes for the immense production values, the attention to detail, the variation of the levels, the quality of the voice acting and the huge field of exploration. No, if it matters, because it just doesn't gel perfectly as a game, because it's a tad short and doesn't live up to the incredible expectations I had of it.

It's still #1 for the year though. (Came out in March in Europe.)

1. Psychonauts
2. Sam and Max Freelance Police Episode 1: Culture Shock
3. Wii Sports

and that's all the new games I've played this year. I'm itching to have another go at Wii sports tonight though.

Actually, I might have to throw in a vote for MII:TW - perhaps at #3 for now, though it might climb higher with more play. Thoroughly enjoying my first game of that at the moment.

I haven't played much of the new games, I tend to replay favorites, but I was able to play a few of the new ones at my brother's place.

1. GalCiv II. Kept me occupied for a long time, and designing your own ships is fun!

2. Viva Pinata. That's right, Viva Pinata. It's supposed to be a kiddie game, and it does that very well, but it has the power to draw in and hold the attention of any adult foolish enough to watch the kiddies play. This game was by far the most played over the Christmas weekend. By everyone.

3. Lego Star Wars II. Fun to play, silliness abounds. Leia vs. Leia slapfights rock!

My brother was impressed with Oblivion and Gears of War, and I liked what I saw, so make them 4 and 5.
