I've been debating this a couple of times recently. If a person has a really severe, mind-altering mental illness, say schitzophrenia or obsessive-compulsive disorder, and they create some form of art while in this state, what attitude should you take towards it?

Should you treat that person as any other artist, risking ridicule, exploitation and potential reinforcement of the disorder though affirmation?

Or should you view the art very carefully and only within the context of the mental illness, in effect being a bit patronising?

art is the effect it gives you. so i wouldnt bother too much with the artist.

Depends on whether the art stands up on its own merits outside of the mental health issues. That's what separates your Nick Drakes and Daniel Johnstons from your Wesley Willis freakshows.

What about potentially great foreign language films made by drunken antisemites?
