Champagne put to the test: Taking the fizz out of bubbly (http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/this_britain/article2026800.ece)

According to the panel of tasters, the 24 Mot & Chandon Brut Imperial was inferior to a 3.99 cava from the Co-op and - how embarrassing is this? - a 3.29 Castell Llord Cava Brut from Netto. It also underperformed Lidl's 11.99 bubbly.

Having tasted quite a few expensive champagnes in my life (but not having paid for them!), I totally agree with this article...

My all-time favourite bottle of bubbly is Montana's Deutz Marlborough Cuvee (http://www.oddbins.com/products/productDetail.asp?productcode=86693) methode champenoise, which cannot even be called a champagne... Bottles of this gem go for 11-12 and I totally swear by it - especially if I have a few too many!:)

How on earth is a 24 bottle considered an "expensive champagne"?

"According to the panel of tasters, the 24 Mot & Chandon Brut Imperial was inferior to..."

that only says about the quality of the panel, not about the champagne.

Although M&C is not my favorite, I prefer extra bruts, above all Piper Heidsieck, or else Mumm and Laurent Perrier.
But that's just personal taste.
I'll see if I can find that link again for a personality test to determine which champagne is the most appropriate for your spirit and inclination...

There's one in Little Hulton and one in Farnworth. Nonetheless, I doubt I'll be making the trip.

Yeah, that one is awesome. Nav, Noisy and I went to look round the winery where they make it in NZ.
