Do you guys drink Egg Nog over there in this time of year?

It is a Thanksgiving, and Christmas, thing for us. Doesn't even appear in stores at other times.

JM
(enjoying a nonalcoholic eggnog now)

I had to look up what it was, but no, it's available all year long here. It is very much for the elderly though.

I've heard of it... not sure if only in US shows though. Never actually seen it I don't think.

Pretty much the same thing as in America then.

Only a limited number of people like it here... but it isn't heavily age segregated.

I know plenty of people my age who like it. Maybe more old people, but that is just because old people are more 'traditional'.

I was talking about Advocaat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advocaat) , it's apparently rather similar.

Interesting...I've never really been sure what eggnog is but I always assumed it was a hot drink.

Mr. Bas

Eggnog is a very disgusting yellow crap. If you drink it you will die. Most people use it to drown their babys.

Yep, that's advocaat allright.

It use to be, and is with alcohol (often). It has just recently (last 50 years) been served a lot nonalcohol and chilled.

Only egg nog reference I have is the Jackass episode when they tried to down a galllon of that stuff, and puking all the way.

Advocaat has some kind of vla-like structure, right? It's probably thicker than eggnog is.

I don't think I'd like it. I hate hot milk and don't think it sounds like it'd be nice as a cold drink.

It's mostly sugar, raw eggs, and millk. I think if you had to down a gallon of milk real fast, most people would puke also (I know I would).

You generally won't find it in many places outside of the Thanksgiving/Christmas and Easter seasons.

I'm sure in the 30's and 40's the Brits liked egg nog just like the Americans did but thankfully those people along with the tradition are now dying. I do remember drinking nonalcoholic egg nog as a kid.

jm: don't forget we drink it for new years as well.

I only drink the nonalcoholic kind as well... i add alot of milk to it. :)

JM^3

I haven't tried adding milk to it. Is it because the taste is too strong?

Do you add skim milk or whole milk?

jm: whatever milk happens to be in the fridge (at least when i was little). Presently, i drink 1% so i guess i'd use that. I use about half and half. Egg nog by itself is a bit too rich for me to like straight.

DM is a 1% milkdrinking woman,
1% milk, 99% pure alcohol :bounce:

I'm pretty pretty impressed

I THink I generally like strong tastes.. but subtle can be good too. And if enough of the taste is there, I think I could drink a good bit more (as it is, a couple glasses and I don't want any more for a while).

Egg nog is too phlegmy on its own.

In sweden we do have egg nog but it's called egg toddy, which is confusing since apparently "toddy" is something else entirely in english.

When I was around 8 or 9 years old I used to drink Advocaat by the glass full. That was until my parents found out!

King_Ghidra
23-11-2006, 10:23:38
advocaat is one of those mystery spirits, a full bottle of which sits behind every bar, that if you are spectacularly unlucky you will order when you are really drunk

from wiki:

There are two varieties of advocaat. "Thick" advocaat is sold mostly on the Dutch market and often eaten with a spoon, while a more liquid version is sold as an export.

it's great because even though I'm lactose intolerant and can't drink milk, I can drink egg nog. I'm not sure why.

generally don't put alcohol in it. Alcohol just ruins the flavour of everything. From coke, to orange juice. I only drink alochol in beer. You can't say alcohol ruins the taste of beer, because beer always has alochol in it (unless perhaps I grew up drinking non-alcoholic beer)

Though this christmas I may put some rum or something in it. I don't have to work later like I did on thanksgiving. So I will be able to drink. But I won't have access to good beer (unless I bring my own- but I'd rather drink other people's alcohol :))

Diss,

"I only drink alochol in beer."

And you have Chuck Norris as your avatar? Dude, a person who prefers semen to booze has to reconsider using someone else in their av.. like... I don't know.

Diss

beer is superior to any hard liquor.

I remember drinking brandy once. I'm like wtf is this? I want something I can drink. Not something I can only sip because it tastes so bad.

SuperCitizen
28-11-2006, 14:34:34
Brandy? I don't like that either.. Beer superior? Might be. I'm not arguing beer is inferior to booze.
