Dear All,

My harddrive recently got screwed. I installed another harddrive and put XP on it. Unfortunately my explorer can't "see" the old drive.

It is a 80Gb drive but my explorer only sees 10MB (i.e. the spare space after the re-installation).

I have tried a few programmes that have claimed to be able to retrieve lost files. One of them scanned my drive and found 60,000 files, but when I went to "save as" it said "please by the full version"!!!

Does anyone know of any good free programmes for retrieving old files??

Appreciate the help!

I've used 'Get data back' successfully before http://www.runtime.org/gdb.htm

Only costs about 35, well worth it if you've got vital stuff on your drive (get the right version though FAT or NTFS).

Aha, interesting, a torrent seems to be some kind of P2P thingy.....very interesting!

basically the torrent is a flag that says, hey i have this file!

then you use an application (like Azureus) that searches for people who have the torrent and you then download the actual file parts from them in a p2p way

i was laughing because fundamentally torrents are one of the web's top sources of pirated, hacked and otherwise illegal stuff. so when you ask is it free, the answer is a pretty resounding yes.

A brother keeping on top of the latest developments in ass porn is known as "on the down low" isn't it?

Thank you for your Torrent information. But, it appears that from that site you can download it! So, it appears torrents are more useful than fileshare programmes??

Why was I not informed of these things before?

you must have missed the internet newsletter that went round

The e-zine? I always miss that shit!

King_Ghidra

and remember, the torrent itself is not the file you are after, it is just an indicator to p2p programs that you have or are looking for the file

so grab the torrent, and then you can start grabbing the file parts from those people who have them

I see, but how can that site claim to offer the whole thing for download (I haven't clikced the button as I think it's NSFW)

King_Ghidra
23-11-2006, 10:46:09
don't know about that site in particular, but it might (shock horror) be being economical with the truth

Funko

It's not, it's the entire torrent not the entire file.

Nills Lagerbaak

Are, things are becoming clearer.

So I download the torrent, and then use a prgramme to search the net using the torrent to identify files of that type??

Why don't I just use emule?

King_Ghidra
23-11-2006, 11:08:05
sure, if you can find the file with emule it's basically the same

torrents are very popular though, so you might get your file quicker, give us a whirl and tell us :D

It's all a bit hypothetical as I have no interweb at home and I don't think they'd appreciate me P2Ping at work!

I will try round a friends house and let you know how I gets on.

Thanks again!!!!!

eMule just downloads the whole file from one person (or maybe a few people), with p2p/torrents you can download lots of little bits of the file from everyone who has it available, and it gets put together by Azureus or whatever program you're using, which in theory means you get it quicker and don't lose connection if one person turns their computer off.

I think that's right anyway...

AH,it's been a long time I know, but I have an update!

Thanks for the Torrent Mr. G, sadly all I got were a load of .Rar archives each containing a large .bin file. I extracted them all to the same folder, I have no idea how I make it work!

Any help would be so much appreciated!

That .bin file is probably a CD/DVD image you need to burn.

Nills Lagerbaak

Ah, thanks! do I just burn litterally that .bin file onto a CD? Why won't it run from the hard drive (it's just that my DVD burner is playing up :()

Debaser

I think .bin files are disc images, so you'll need to burn them to a DVD using Nero or something like it.

Fistandantilus
26-04-2007, 16:16:23
Yup. Or you can just set up a virtual drive (Nero, Alcohol and so on let you do that) so you can keep the .bin on your harddrive and run it from there.

try a piece of software called 'isobuster' (look on bittorrent) or something similar to that. Can extract various archive files without the stupidity of having to write a CD (a what?)
