View Full Version : 3, 2, 1 BLAST OFF!!! The PS3 has launched

Unless you're too cool for this gaming stuff, or you've lived under a rock for the last year or so, you've heard of this Play Station 3 thing. Well it launched in America Thursday amid reports of riots, robberies and a general lack of law and order.

I'd post links to such things but there are so many it's ridiculous. Go look for yourself. And then post them in the thread that this news article has created.

FYI Nav, the news thing seems a bit fucked up.

17-11-2006, 14:58:24
And I'm not kidding, some dude in Maine got shot when a robbery demanded his money in a line outside the store.

17-11-2006, 15:05:26
You seem pretty excited about this, did you pick one up?

17-11-2006, 15:24:09
No but he got $400 from some guy in Maine.

17-11-2006, 15:47:41
And I got to shoot someone.

Perhaps this will appease you:

what were the stats on the number of consoles available in the US in the end? 80k? 100k?

17-11-2006, 17:08:58
The original estimate was 400k. It's widely believed that it was more like 150k to 200k.

What is PS3?

17-11-2006, 20:03:19
Hmm, more expensive, artificially less availability, lied about being backward compatable, nothing to make it stand out against 360...

If i were going to waste that much money I know I would get the 30 or wii.

17-11-2006, 20:06:30
It's going for, on average, $2000 bucks on ebay. There on some crazy people out there. Spend 2k and not even be able to play any good games.

It's funny because every single game that's on both the PS3 and Xbox 360 looks and plays better on the Xbox 360. I remember a year ago when Sony said the next-generation starts when they said so...

They also have some fundamentally stupid shit with their console. For instance, the charge cable for the controllers is 5 feet long...that's it. Batteries in the controller are NOT replaceable. So what do you do when the battery dies while you're playing? Sit up close to your "True HD bigscreen TV" they hype so much. Brilliant.

The console is also incapable of scaling. Which means if the game renders in 720p, that's what's being output. This screws early HDTV adopters who can only accept 1080i or 480p, as they get to see gorgeous 480p on their set.

It also means that non-HDTV people get screwed because the game renders at 480p, not 720p and downscaled like the 360 (more jaggies on the PS3).

Turns out a couple small games like "Final Fantasy" and "Gran Turismo" don't work properly in backwards compatibility. Oops.

Their online setup is a complete disaster. Their flagship title, Resistence, has two sets of buddy lists, etc -- one for the Playstation Network and one for Xfire. The PSN devkits came VERY late and lacking lots of very basic functionality (and apparently buggy). Most games are just dropping online support on the PS3 versions, but Resistence did a lot of heavy lifting themselves to put in a PSN-incompatible version.

A common theme among games is that they're in 720p, not 1080p like Sony hyped, and they have framerate issues. Can you FEEL THE POWER? There is really no excuse for this other than very difficult hardware with bottlenecks, because the PS3 devkits have been in developers hands for as long as the Xbox 360 devkits have. Pathetic, truly.

The console also scratches and fingerprints VERY easily.

It also apparently plays DVDs at 480p, no upscaling to 720p/1080i/1080p a la the 360.

Venom news posting is a half-arsed hack. But if you'd followed the instructions and not tried to edit it in the admin there wouldn't have been a problem. ;)

I'm definately sitting on the fence with the next-gen console thing. Recently built a new PC (with an almost 300 gfx card) so have spent enough!

Instructions are for pussies.

back on topic

a pretty damning report from the NYT

I'm more of a MS fanboy, but I have mixed feelings about this fuck up. This can't be good for the industry and for gamers.

20-11-2006, 15:38:03
The games still make the console, and Sony doesn't have much to play.

20-11-2006, 15:40:49
But that article also makes it sound like a technical disaster. Ouch.

No. It's not true. It is true, however, that your mother once sucked so much cock in one day she was named General Sanders.
