Let's give the new format a quick, informal run-though before doing a full-blown one again.

The theme is Christmas Songs (in the loosest sense of the word) and since it's a Compo we're probably going to want to play during the holidays the deadline is three weeks from now, the 3rd of December. If you want to participate, please e-mail the song to me in 192 kbps or higher MP3, stating your username. No files bigger than 30 MB please.

birdseed at loudmedicine dot net (birdseed_at_loudmedicine_dot_net)

Alternatively, you may send them on CD to me at:

Johan Palme
Biologigränd 29
SE-907 32 Umeå
SWEDEN

If you want to participate, please also state in this thread whether you want to download the songs as a package or recieve a CD.

Don't whine about the short deadline, sending stuff over the net is really easy people.

Agreed. I think even I can download and then let us drive our neanderthal post offices into extinction.

hm........... I need to think a bit about Crissy songs

Funko
13-11-2006, 09:13:21
3 weeks is plenty of time. I just can't think of any Christmas theme songs yet. :D

Mr. Bas
13-11-2006, 11:41:45
I'm in as well, no concrete songs in mind yet.

Resource Consumer

I am struggling here - I will need to examine carefully my collection for Crissy songs - not normally things I would have

Funko
14-11-2006, 13:27:10
The trick is going to be avoiding all the tracks that are on a normal Christmas album.

:nervous:

Scabrous Birdseed

Winter songs, songs about sharing, a friendly atmosphere and understanding, songs about righting world injustice, songs about ham, turkey, anal sex and brandy butter, songs about elves, songs about mistletoe, or whatever. Songs that represent what christmas means to you.

Resource Consumer
14-11-2006, 18:23:42
got it :)

songs about drinking and presents :D

Scabrous Birdseed
14-11-2006, 18:25:35
Also, perhaps this should be added, music you wouldn't mind listening to during christmas. ;)

JM^3
14-11-2006, 21:02:15
No songs about Religion?

JM

Scabrous Birdseed
15-11-2006, 07:27:58
Yeah, those too. If you have any good ones, send 'em along.

Resource Consumer
17-11-2006, 09:50:44
I think I have found one with "Christmas" in the title :)

Scabrous Birdseed
17-11-2006, 09:52:53
But is it any good?

Funko
17-11-2006, 09:54:06
I pretty much have no computer at home for the next 7-10 working days... so I might miss the deadline

Scabrous Birdseed
17-11-2006, 10:07:34
Booo!

Or send me a CD.

Funko
17-11-2006, 10:09:56
And what will I burn it on? :)

I'll try and bring CDs into work.

Tizzy
17-11-2006, 10:44:03
One song each? Hmm....

You want me to send you 10 days worth of screeching death metal? Because that's what I feel like after the Christmas period.... :o

BTW, Scabby. If I have a song in Lossless format and it is less than 30 MB is that OK?

Actually, I'm considering a black metal track. But I might save that for sometime later on.

That should be OK. I'll just recompress it for easier distribution later.

No lossy compression other than MP3 though, guys.

So how's this coming along? I've got no entries with just under two weeks to go.

Funko
21-11-2006, 12:20:59
Haven't even thought about it yet.

Tizzy
21-11-2006, 12:23:03
I thought about it and forgot to actually do anything...

Scabrous Birdseed
21-11-2006, 12:23:12
Just checking. :)

Funko
21-11-2006, 12:23:38
Main annoyance is the computer with all the MP3s on is being repaired, so I'd have to actually rip something again.

Tizzy
21-11-2006, 12:28:40
Deciding on one song is also delaying me.

mr_G
22-11-2006, 14:14:35

Annoyingly the only good song I have which really qualifies is one which I got on one of Laz's PYE compilations.

Therefore you're liable to end up with either a not-very-good track from me, or one which isn't particularly Christmassy except in my head.

Scabrous Birdseed
23-11-2006, 15:29:18
Whichever. I think we'd all prefer good tracks though, am I wrong?

Funko
23-11-2006, 16:11:14
I agree.

Plus, fundamentally, I think this compilation is about "what is christmassy in my head" not just something with sleigh bells or whatever.

Scabrous Birdseed
23-11-2006, 16:29:57
Hey, I like Sleigh Bells!

Oh wait, my entry doesn't have any either.

Funko
23-11-2006, 17:30:16
I'm not saying NO SLEIGH BELLS!

just that they aren't compulsary.

Tizzy
24-11-2006, 09:31:47
I still can't decide which one to use.
I have a funny one or one which fits "what is christmassy in my head".
It may have to be a last minute "that'll do" decision :D

Resource Consumer
24-11-2006, 13:44:08
I am adding lots of sleigh bells and children singing

Resource Consumer
25-11-2006, 18:49:07
No. I think I have something even worse and everyone will both hate it or fail to see the relevance

Resource Consumer
25-11-2006, 19:42:24
Sent. Scabby, I have MP3-ed already so no need for any other tweaking.

Everyone will GUARANTEED hate this.:D

Scabrous Birdseed

Thank you, recieved. I, at least, do not hate it. Yet.

Scabrous Birdseed
26-11-2006, 08:38:44
Oh, and I had to redownload MrGs since it was in the wrong format. That's another option if you're real lazy - PM the name of the track and I'll try to find it on SoulSeek.

No, no, Mr G - they're meant to be anonymous.

Funko
29-11-2006, 09:25:29
I'd have assumed K_G for the obscure bad Dutch pop song.

Scabrous Birdseed
29-11-2006, 09:29:09
I've got three tracks so far, including my own, and there's less than a week to go. Should I be worried?

Funko
29-11-2006, 09:31:46
I was meant to bring the CD with my track into work every day this week, so far I've forgotten every day.

In for a half day tomorrow, then away for the weekend can I submit on the deadline?

Scabrous Birdseed
29-11-2006, 10:22:24
Oh you were talking to Tizzy. I thought you were asking me to download it for you.

Tizzy
29-11-2006, 10:35:57
Scabby - I thought he was talking to you too.

Funko - yes.

Funko
29-11-2006, 10:40:38
But I replied to Tizzy's post?! You fools.

Tizzy
29-11-2006, 10:41:18
Be nice. Or I might "accidentally" forget.

Mr. Bas
29-11-2006, 10:55:00
I'll try and think of something this week. I've got four options in mind, and none of them have anything at all to do with christmas. As soon as I've decided on something, it'll be in the mail.

Mr. Bas
29-11-2006, 10:55:39
Alternatively, I might decide through a coin toss.

Tau Ceti
29-11-2006, 11:11:59
Surely two coin tosses?

Tizzy
29-11-2006, 11:24:17
Ok, I might just do that :D

Funko
29-11-2006, 11:26:51
It turns out Tizzy and I were potentially sending the same song, that'd have been funny.

Tizzy
29-11-2006, 11:30:29
I have 2 or 3 other options as well though, mainly cos I thought you might pick that one :D

Mr. Bas
29-11-2006, 11:30:52
Two coin tosses indeed. Actually, I thought of a fifth option, and in one of the options I've only decided on the artist, not on the particular song, so more coin tosses would be necessary.

Tizzy
29-11-2006, 11:33:01
There's going to be a lot of tossing over the next few days.

Mr. Bas
29-11-2006, 11:35:00
Bunch of tossers.

Scabrous Birdseed
29-11-2006, 11:35:21

Resource Consumer
29-11-2006, 18:38:21
get on with it you tossers

Mr. Bas
30-11-2006, 09:45:05
I've tossed, but I'm still undecided. I'll probably have to toss more.

Tizzy
30-11-2006, 09:47:25
I will have to toss tonight.

Scabrous Birdseed
01-12-2006, 16:09:19
So, only three more definite entries for a total of six... This is going fairly badly isn't it? I'd want at least ten for this to not be a total failure.

Mr. Bas
01-12-2006, 16:14:38
Third of december, eh. Shit, I'll have to decide now or tomorrow. Err, I'll think about it, you'll receive something in the very near future.

Mr. Bas
01-12-2006, 16:51:13
A series of 4 tosses has lead to a decision. I'll send the track to you very soon.

Tizzy
01-12-2006, 16:54:47
I'll have to do mine (and Funko's) tomorrow now I think...

Scabrous Birdseed
01-12-2006, 18:01:33

I'd prefer it if you didn't. That way, if something goes wrong with the file, I can do something about it.

You're #7, this is coming together a bit now.

---

Tizzy and Funko - I'm sorry, but I'm afraid your tracks don't work at all.

Scabrous Birdseed
02-12-2006, 09:23:52
Yup, I've done some more checking and none of my programs that usually accept MP3s take your files. Sorry.

Scabrous Birdseed
02-12-2006, 13:25:32
See now those work, thankyouverymuchbytheway, but it would be lovely if they had a tad higher bitrate. Also, I've got no idea whose is whose.

Scabrous Birdseed

Ray! Seven official, four bonuses.

Scabrous Birdseed
03-12-2006, 10:28:54
Should everything go to hell I've got a couple of epic-length bonuses I can replace my second entry with.

Scabrous Birdseed
03-12-2006, 14:16:50
I really, really can't find Funko's entry at a higher bitrate anywhere. It would be a pity to leave it as low-bitrate as it is, the sound is fairly muddy and it would really benefit from a re-encoding.

Tizzy, it's not really that difficult if you want to try it again. Please Please Please? I've got the other two.

Download this program:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos/

Go to Options -> Settings, it should be on the encoder tab. Set the encoder to "Lame" if it isn't already. Change the bitrate to 224 kbps, optionally also change the quality to "very high" and the Mode to J-stereo.

Insert the CD and highlight the tracks you want ripped, then press the second button at the top-right. Once it's done the file should have ended up in your "My Music" folder unless you've changed that setting.

Tizzy
04-12-2006, 09:30:22
I didn't see your post yesterday, if you really need me to do this it'll have to be after I get home tonight.

Scabrous Birdseed
04-12-2006, 09:34:29
Please? I can sequence and stuff with the existing tracks, add that tonight and do the send-out tomorrow.

Scabrous Birdseed
04-12-2006, 19:32:17
Ray! I'll see if I can't do the upload tonight then.

Scabrous Birdseed
04-12-2006, 20:01:32
Damn, this is fairly difficult to sequence - no-one, for obvious reasons has submitted an up-tempo song, which makes it tricky to preserve energy.
