View Full Version : Finding that first true job sucks the most

I'm looking for a new job. Not just any job, but a real job ... and by that I mean something resembling a career instead of just a paycheck. I got a Bachelors now but no actual work experience in anything really. Alas my years of stocking stuff isn't that handy aside from well stocking stuff elsewhere. This is where the problem is. Everywhere is looking for people with degree + experience. This leads to the question:
How am I supposed to ever get the experience required for your job if there aren't any places wanting to hire anyone without work experience?
:hmm:

this is a pretty standard question from what I ahve seen

It means you have to start with an up and coming company that is willing to accept people with little to no experience. The sort of company that doesn't even have health insurance.

Do what I did: Get your experience first, then get a degree = Presto, degree and experience!:D

Try the various temp agencies since those people will often take a degreed person without experience. That way you can get your foot in the door and a few month of valuable experience. Alternatively you can just send resumes to every company in your area which is working in the field you are interested in. Lots of time companies won't be advertising but they're still looking out for decent people. Showing initutive might put you ahead of others. Lastly, join any local professional organizations in your field. I've met lots of contacts and networking opportunities due to joining the local geologic society and the local environmental consultants organization.

I'm really happy to be in the co-op program. I'm going to be doing a 12-month internship at General Dynamics in Calgary next year. That's probably not something I could have come up with on my own.

Offer yourself to free for a couple of weeks to some companies so you can get the experience. Try local companies rather than large national or global ones for that.

so get the shitty job through connections and only work there long enough to get the experience to go some place better..or back to college. :)

I think Oerdin has the right idea...just find a job that gives you experience. And be prepared to be patient, and perhaps have to move around to find the right vocation for you!

Oerdin

The important thing is to identify the field you want to get into. That will determine what you do from here. Think about what your degree is in since that is what you have the most qualifications for at this point. If you want to do something radically different but don't know what then go to the library and pick up a copy of the Occupational Outlook Handbook which is a government estimation of which jobs will be growing in number, which shrinking in number, what work conditions are like, what qualifications are needed, and what the pay is like. Also look on the list of the 20 highest paid careers since not all of them require advanced degrees (but do require lots of intelligent thinking as well as long hours and screwed up schedules). Still you might find ideas.

I actually had more of an issue with the single letter posts. But I agree it's more against the spirit of the challenge than against the rules per se. If mr_G wants to resort to underhand tactics to win, then that's his problem. :p

Tizzy
01-11-2006, 11:13:07
I don't think single letter posts are underhand tactics. They make the challenge more boring certainly (both when you're posting and observing) but they don't give any sort of advantage so they are perfectly legal, albeit against the spirit of the competition.
