My internet connection has been down, so digging out lots of old stuff.

HL2 (PC) - still not finished it yet.

Pokemon Leaf Green (GBA) - on my GBA emulator

Fire Emblem (GBA) - on my DS (go figure)

Lego Star Wars II (XBOX 360) - awesome stuff, great sense of humour.

Dungeon Siege II (PC) - Installed last night and had a quick blast. Action RPG by the numbers but still fun.

PES5 (PS2)

Not very much lately, a bit of CivIV (PC) and some Guitar Hero (PS2) is about it.

Although if I ever figure out the emulator etc I'll be spending a lot of time playing old Atari games I downloaded the other day.

I was at my parents' place last weekend, I've played some older games there. Some civ 2, a short session of Sensible World of Soccer and a bit of Discworld. They're all games that I've played a lot more in the past.

I occassionally play some Civ 4 and football manager at home, though I've done neither for some time. Other favourites from the recent past are SWAT 4, GTA San Andreas and for multiplayering GTA 2.

I'm rather confused about half of the acronyms used here though. GBA? HoMM? CS:S?

I haven't looked, so I don't know if there are any publically available versions out there. The one I've been playing is one I'm writing. It's not hugely great thus far: the most you can do is build cities and move a few units around the map. And there's no AI. And it's a 10x10 map, which is a little limiting.

I hope to be able to at least emulate Civ One in it, with a few select features from the later games (cultural borders, moving units as groups etc.) but that could be a long way off yet.

If you do happen to come across one that someone's already written, let me know! Then I can blow mine off :)

I never even contempated running a non-TBS game in Excel, that's crazy :D

ah really? oh well that's ok then, i was scared by the utter pounding my characters took when trying the first dungeon, and the fact that because of the save system i then had to go back through the whole dungeon again before i got my next pounding, etc. ad infinitum.

in fairness, since i did some levelling up and beat that dungeon the game has been a lot more evenly pitched, so maybe it 's easy street from here on in.

i am absolutely loving the monster designs and the beautiful score.

Mr. Bas

Mostly football manager 2006. I just took over at Chelsea, after previous spells at FC Groningen, Newcastle, Udinese and the Dutch team. Not surprisingly, Chelsea have insane amounts of money to throw around, unfortunately very few clubs want to sell to you, let alone for reasonable prices. Although I've led Holland to the world title and won a UEFA cup, I haven't won a league yet in the seven or so game years, so it'll be about time.

Actually in fairness you're right - I'd forgotten about that part. I also found the first dungeon to be very tough, but once you get your characters leveled a bit it becomes much more standard. I was a little disappointed that the game wasn't more difficult (looking back, struggling through the first dungeon was actually lots of fun), but I thoroughly enjoyed the game nonetheless.

I'm still navigating between PES 6 in the 5th season of ML with Arsenal (with a very agressive youth buying strategy, on medium), and MTWII, heavily modded ("the long road", 900 turns), on a fun campaign with the byzantines. I play some Wii tennis with the pregnant missus. I'm supposed to play Wii Zelda but don't have time. I still play Tiger Woods on my PSP when I travel. I'll probably buy Pirates for the PSP soon.

If I could be bothered to install my wi-fi, and get my 360 on line, I'd probably download the Oblivion ad-on.

I played briefly the tom clancy las vegas game the other day in co-op on 360, was pretty fun really.

I've been trying to play through some of the supposedly highest-quality GBA games via emulator.

Zelda: The Minish Cap was brilliant, but the rest are fairly meh. Fire Emblem, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Kirby and the Amazing Mirror and Tony Hawk's Underground are probably the picks of a fairly lacklustre bunch.

(From a previous attempt I've played through WarioWare and Pokemon Emerald, both of which were good.)

Bwahahah, the interweb is back at chez K_G.

I jumped straight on to my 360 and put the beatdown on some fools in SFII with Blanka. Then i downloaded some new cas to play with in Test Drive Unlimited and had a bit of a drive around online.
Then i let the demos of Phantasy Star Universe and Crackdown download last night.

I was a huge Phantasy Star Online fan so i'm keen to try that out, though whether i would put the time in that i once did i don't know.

Crackdown is basically GTA on steroids. You can leap tall buldings, pick up lorries and smack people with them, or just blow them away in a hail of explosions. The graphical style is like a mix of GTA and a pseudo cartoony/anime thing and it is pretty sexy. It's getting rather good reviews too.

Hopefully the AI will pick up. I played as the aztecs and had killed all the other native american cultures before the brits had landed in the new world. New game is as china, and I dug myself into a nice financial hole, or maybe not, its hard to tell with the game if you are doing well or not financially.

Also the game is similar to older ones in the documentation is horrible. Trying to figure out how the market/trade works is interesting, and diplomats?

Are vassals supposed to decalare war on you when you declare war on their enemy?

Must admit that I haven't really played much with the earlier EU games, but I am enjoying this one so far. Played almost 50 years yesterday as Spain, just learning the ropes of the game, and in particular trade and colonisation.

Discovered that winning a war can be difficult when you're not sure what you're doing. Decided to let myself be dragged into a war my allies got involved in, and even managed to get the necessary military access to get to one of the HRE states that was at war with my ally (which was Genoa, but he'd lost any coastal land he may have had).

But by the time I had wandered in, my ally had already made peace with him, leaving me in the lurch. It also seemed to break our alliance for some reason - presumably for him negotiating peace without me when I was the senior partner in the alliance? Haven't read up on that one yet.

So I beseiged his two provinces, and all I ended up with was a war score that allowed me to force vassalise him. Which was nice I suppose, but I would have expected something more considering I smashed him all over the place (16k+ troops walked all over his 2k).

So, then I thought I'd read up on annexing. Hmm, need him to have a relation of 190+ and him to have been a vassal for 10+ years. Allright. So I spent 10 years buttering him up, and then annexed him. What a load of work to go to though. And despite the tooltip saying our relations were supposed to improve over time, I didn't see any evidence of it.

So, later I decided to take on Aragon, cos I wanted to see how a larger war would go, and I wanted to try and create Spain. So I made up 4 armies, 10k, 8k, 7k and 6k for the invasion, and ensured that I had 18k manpower left for top-ups. Hmm, mistake right there. The main problem being that he ended up having almost as many troops himself. And I'm not sure how (yes, I do know about the assault button, and he hadn't even discovered cannons yet, and it wasn't to do with provinces with small garisons), but he could beseige one of my provinces with 2k troops and finish it off within a short-ish period of time, whereas I'd be taking longer beseiging provinces with 6k troops.

But basically, he'd create 10 small armies of 1-2k and I'd be chasing them all over the place, losing provinces left right and center. And that's on Easy. :nervous:

So, I think a rethink of my tactics might be in order, as well as a reevaluation of just how many troops I might need for a decent sized war.

Trade I didn't find too bad. I spent a good 20 odd years just colonising and trading, and ended up with, at one stage, 4 trading centers that I had 5 merchants in. And my colonies in the New World were providing me a huge boost to my trade center, and to my finances in general. Especially when I got two gold producing cities.

My only problem with colonisation - it's a very drawn out process. I do like how you convert natives to your side when you become a city, and I also like how you can just exterminate them if they're too aggressive. I just wish there were an easy way to calm 2500+ natives. :D

Diplomacy seems ok too. Though it seems that I need to put a lot more effort into it. Because being a peace loving builder type for 30 odd years didn't endear me to anyone, even if I had an honourable reputation.

As for that last one HK, that sounds like a bug.

Chris

Well, I have zero idea how trade works, left it to the AI.

From what i have seen about combat, don't bother making war unless you have cannon and leaders.

You can get more than vasselization, I have built England into Great Britain by defeating Scotland a few times, the last two wars I demanded all territory leaving them with just one province, and waited for France to again attack (they were allied) so i could annex the last of it.

The easiest way to colonize is to exterminate the locals, this can be tough early. But once I got the hang of it, it becomes simple.

The best thing to do is to only have POWERFUL allies, little shits drag yoiu into war and do not help.

Because I took Hamberg early (they declared war on me) I had a toe hold in germany, and managed to be not only the controller of the Pope but the Holy Roman Emperor as well.

These two titles always make me supreme in any alliance, and since I control the seas Britain cannot be touched, but I can get my Allies (Austria, portugual and Milan) to do a lot of heavy lifting.

Somehow I inherited the throne of Poland which gave me 2 provinces in eastern Europe.

One thing I don't like is you can't trade provinces, you can only sell them.

The Frogs kept demanding Calais early, they occupied it, instead of a costly invasion of France I simply blockaded them, and sized Jamaca and all their small colonies in the Americas, they soon accepted peace, now they love me (and I still own Calais).

There appears to be no real penalty for staying at war, so NEVER give in to occupying bullies, many of them attacked me and demanded Ducats which I never provided, i simply waited for my allies to start hammering them, the HRE is a very effective coaltion.

For example, Caves are now filled with powerful Amazons. I also noticed in each town in certain rooms you see news items about them, as well as bandits and maruaders in old castles and things.

You don't level as quickly, so you have to be careful what you take on, you cannot do the main quest at first, you have to be around level 15, but you will be able to kick as as you get stronger.

The roads have far fewer bandits and there are more imperial patrols, including woman imperial troops.

I've been dipping in and out of Supreme Commander for the last couple of weeks. First RTS i've played in donkeys years (since Warcraft 3 anyway).

I think it sufficiently different to any of the old style rts's to warrant a look. The instant zoom out map is cool, queuing actions is a massive time saver, transporting masses of units across a map is dead easy with convoy transport options, units and graphics are cool and the supreme commander adds a new dimension to the gameplay.

Haven't tried it online. Mainly 'cause I know I'd get a pasting. :)

With my little free time I have been playing around in Vanguard, the optimization from Beta is pretty good and with my pathetic 6800 and AMD 3200 I can get high teens low 20s FPS in full groups at low graphics, or high 20s low 30s alone on mid graphics in the wild.

And the content keeps pouring out in the game. Supposedly this month they split into the live update, expansion, and patch teams. The live update team wil add to the curerent game similar to COH, the expansion team will work on epansions, and the bug team fixes bugs.

It looks like the fact they have the artwork and land built for about double the size of the current game should make it easy to add on. They are also talking about adding chunks under the current world and above so that you can do an underdark world literally below the current game world. Apparently they also have a way to do non-euclidean dungeons and make them Escheresque. Those are obvious expansion topics though.

My only real complaints so far are that Kojan was only lvl 1-20.

I think that now Vanguard is out I'm allowed to say I really didn't like it. It got better closer to the end of beta, but there were still some things that were horribly broken right up to the end. I think it went out too early.

The combat is interesting, the crafting is more interesting than WoW, but a little slow, so it tends to get boring.

Mostly I think its just the more grouping-centered style of the game that turned me off. Sometimes I just want to be left alone and solo, and sometimes it was difficult to do anything without help. Stuff you can solo gets boring fast.

One thing that bugged me about Beta is that if a quest was too hard, I couldn't figure out a way to provide that feedback without finishing it first... I was probably just :drekkus: but hmph!

most of my time is spent on LOTRO

I still regularly play PES6: (some development here for the benefit of KG/Funko and our earlier discussions on my lameness): the ugly duck is now a swann. I'm now on top player level, and would normally loose about 3 or 4 games max a season, winning all competitions and trashing the other big teams comprehensively (6-0 against Milan yesterday night for example, 11-1 on the two rounds of the champ league). I do however have assembled the very best team possible (I'm in season 11, play as Juve), thanks to a very unrealistic pre-cog knowledge of who the best young players are. My line up (play 433, with LW, SS and pure Stricker up front):

GK; Buffon (now 34) and Yohan Pelé
Defenders: Kompany, Valeme, Jargan, Matthieu, A.Ferdinand, Zabaletta, Zoro, Piccolo
Midfield: Assaiti, Joao Moutinho, Guzman, M'Bami, Matuidi, Pinaar,
Attackers: Tevez, Park, Torres, Aguro, Yamada, Shaw (had Henry for 3 years, from 31 to 34, was still amazing).

Yamada is pretty amazing, but the stars are, unsurprisingly, Torres, Tevez, are Park are the stars of the show.

plus a sprinckling of newcomers I have hopes on. I never managed to buy Rooney despite the ridiculous money I threw at him.

I do suspect however, that with a lame team, I'd still be pretty poor, and likewise against a human: got too used to playing the computer.

The only game I've been playing recently is Football Manager, the 2006 version. I'm currently Port Vale manager, and in 2008 I've finally taken them up to the Championship. Still, I'm finding it pretty hard to structurally improve your club, it took me 3 years to get out of league one and it'll take me at least that many to make it to the premiership if I stick with Port Vale. Much harder than breezing through the leagues like it was possible to do with in Premier Manager 2.

This is the 2nd expansion, warlords was the first, and it was very good.

This one adds a ton of new stuff and it changes the game, there are a number of new units (Ships of the line, Curissars, missle destroyers just to name a few).

There is also the 'corporation' concept, they use up a great person but can add gold, influence, production, food and even comodities depending on the kind of corporation you have.

You can also mess with nations that don't have your religion if you build the correct wonder, and freeze them out of trading.

There is even a new wonder that increases by 50% the length of golden ages.

Chris
14-08-2007, 23:13:27
There is a religious 'UN' that works in the earlier ages now, I managed to force Rome to give me a city as I control the Church that built the wonder, but the Romans didn't take it well and immediately dclared war!

BTS is great, added a lot of new stuff and 10 civs.

Civ 4 is getting close to Civ 2 now as a great game.

I've been playing that a lot over the weekend also. Civ 4 has already taken more of my time than Civ 2 ever did.

It's great how customisable they've made Civ 4. Fair play to them.

to be fair, you only had to buy Civ 2 once

Fooling with a CDV game called 'Pearl Harbor' right now, its a simplistic flight simulator that is surprisingly addictive.

I thought Warlords was a pretty good expansion pack in terms of features as these things go (many disagreed) but BtS is one of the most feature rich expansions I've ever bought.

We should probably have a Civ4 thread... but I never build the Great Wall. Tizzy loves it, I don't find the barbs that much of a problem.

There were two expansion packs, and the gold edition, and test of time for civ 2 at least...

I'm playing Oblivion a lot. What a great game!

Before that, I started a froob account on Anarchy Online, got to level 11, and reestablished contact with some people I knew on there.

Mostly Oblivion right now.

Darklands. A roleplaying game circa 1991 from Microprose. Still great to play today, I don't think there's another RPG that quite encompasses the allure of this game.

The Valve Orange box.

HL2 ep2, Portal and TF2. Just downloaded it last night, mainly to get TF2. I may play through HL2 completely though, as i never finished it first time. TF2 is lovely though.

Vanilla Civ4 in the car this weekend. Lots of driving (wife drove, I don't drive fast enough, I guess).

I can't play a nicey-nice culture game for shit. I can make friends, but am lucky to turn one city before game's end.

Finally started a new game, made some Jaguars and took 3 Japanese cities before my economy collapsed and I had to agree to peace. Then I made nicey nice, and things are going much better. I guess you have to knock someone's teeth down their thoat before the other kids respect you.

Still playing MTW2!

Currently playing the venetians and am getting hammered by the mongols. Lost antioch but acre is fully upgraded and it will be hard for them to crack.

Am trying to play nice which is limiting my possibilities for expansion. Will have to engineer some excuse to fininsh off milan and the hungarians.

Chris
22-10-2007, 21:00:02
I try to avoid the Levant in that game, the Mongols are tough, but the Timurds are too much, they march around with that stupid 8-10 armies and you can't beat them, plus they have rockets and blow cities apart.

I wait until I have 44 provinces in the west an America and then swoop down on Jeruselem in the end.

I've been playing Organized civs on Noble and it's ridiculous how fast you can expand without taking a big hit to your economy. I was living my Manifest Destiny dreams.

Almost exclusively in the last two weeks I've been playing TF2. I really hated TFC and was not impressed initially with TF2 (I mean Rocket Jumping in this day and age? Isn't that 'so 90s'?) but it's completely turned me around, fantastically balanced game that can be completely insane and increasingly hard to play as I'm crying with laughter most of the time.

I'm sure it will get old but for the moment it is all I am playing.

still on Civ4 BtS, having a blast as the Dutch (yes, I know), I call myself Maroule Orantje in the game, btw
they have a fantastic building, the dike, giving a hammer per river AND sea square... as I am on an island map... Looks like I'm going to win this campaign (immense map, 10 civs, monarch) after having lost the last monarch one (Justinian)

Doing some Halo3, like it, but not blown away
Bought Fifa08, played one game, got back to PES6 (will try again)
and doing rather a lot of LOTRO (36 level now) with two mates

Perhaps, but I'd rather short than they add in boring padding bits. Or make the game fiendishly hard to lessen the enjoyment of it. It was paced just right for the ideas they had.
