That's pretty cheap, considering that you're going to have to sell some internal organs if you want to buy a PS3 at launch.

I've never been a massive Nintendo fan, but that is a tempting price tag.

Who's getting one?

You're kidding, right?

That thing's a ripoff considering that the cost of the components are ~$100US, max. And it's $250US.

The hardware is in the ballpark of Xbox(1).

How much did you pay for your car?

Asher
20-09-2006, 02:38:01
My car does a lot more than the Wii. More than proportionate with its price.

HelloKitty

But how much did the components cost?

I assume you only paid the cost of components since the cost of development, production, research, marketing, shipment, etc are all irrelevent.

So your Geo was what? 800$?

Actually the profits on the Mazda 3s are very slim.

If you're trying to make a point it's completely off.

I wouldn't by a Range Rover for the same reason I wouldn't by a Wii -- the cost doesn't justify what you get.

It doesn't matter how much the fucking components cost. The only thing that matters is its price point relative to the rest of the market.

As for the hardware capabilities, well we know how obsessed you are with such things but, freaks aside, most people want simply to be able to play good fun games with decent graphics.

Wii is promising to deliver on that, and has an innovative controller that could lead to some really unique gameplay. Those are good things, and gamers who pay out will clearly be getting their money's worth.

Yep...I'll be purchasing one, as it does look like a lot of fun (and infinitely more appealling than the 360 or PS3).

Profits isn't what I asked about since you used some bizarro components cost arguement.

How much did you pay for the BF-Mobile compared to the cost of THE COMPONENTS?

I would guess 4-5 times the amount.

That makes the Wii a bargain at your estimate of only 2.5 times the cost of the components.

Later today I may go buy a persian rug. I shouldn't cost more than 50$, all that fabric is cheap!

Some revision for you:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Set_theory

Set theory is the mathematical theory of sets, which represent collections of abstract objects. It encompasses the everyday notions, introduced in primary school, of collections of objects, and the elements of, and membership in, such collections.

The problem is the profit margin on Wii looks to be astronomical. Cars have a lot of higher expenses in terms of production, shipping, and testing than game consoles have.

I think what Nintendo's doing is the cheap/lazy/hardcore-profit way out and I think that's a dangerous precedent. It's one thing to be innovative (the controller still screams gimmick to me that is only applicable to some games, not all), it's another thing to give up on technical innovation altogether and go with comparatively extremely weak hardware.

Yes, it's all about the games, but weaker hardware fundamentally restricts what kind of games you can play -- that's why we don't have GTA on a Commodore 64.

I suppose it all comes down to whether you find Nintendo's new-found innovation in the vein of Nintendogs and Super Mario Pong to be fun.

Nintendo has a problem of talking about innovation (dating back to the Gamecube days) and then delivering dozens of cookie-cutter Nintendo-franchise games that most of the world rolls their eyes to but Nintendo fanboys pick up and rate 10/10.

I probably won't be getting any of the Next Gen systems.

The last consol games that I played a lot (not the 10-20 hours that I seem to play most ones I enjoy recently) were:

Resident Evil 4
Soul Caliber 2
Halo 2
Halo

I have bought a lot of games.. most of them I played for a bit of time here and there, then forgot about. That is OK for travel games (my PSP broke down sometime in the last month.. not sure why, the last time I even touched it was when I put it in my laptop bag when returning to MD from OR (it worked in OR)), but isn't what I would expect out of a Consol.

On the other hand, games that I have played a lot on the PC (in a similiar time frame) include:
EVE
CoH
WoW
EQ2
AO
CS:S
Civ4
Civ3
Starcraft
RON
AO
... and more

Besides there is only one computer game that I have boughten recently and not played 10-20 hours.. and I still intend to.

While there are many Consol games which I have hardly touched.

It is mostly that I like playing games MP, and the PS2 is mostly SP (unless you have freinds over.. which I don't do right now).

Sure, fair point. But we've already had some discussion about the potential of luring in other kinds of fan boy with a lightsabre duelling game etc. The tennis demo i saw recently seemed to deliver something that would be very appealing to non-hardcore gamers too.

My own angle is that whether ninty sells mega billions of units or not, if it means i get to play some fun and unique games then that's good enough for me. If ps3 sells several trillion units but the best game is tekken 5 then fuck it, why bother, it'll be broadly similar to the ps2 version.

Your hardware argument works both ways, i may not be able to play gta on a c64, but i can play it on about 5 other different platforms, so i'm going to need a lot of convincing to see a game like that as a selling point for a next-gen console.

When it hits its justified pricepoint of $150 it'll be worth a look, provided they produce something more interesting than Super Mario Knitting.

it's this whole entertainment platform stuff these days

it's not enough to be able to play games on a games console you know

personal experience seems to indicate that anyone who has an internet connection has a pc, so if their games console can take advanatge of it that's good and everything, but hardly a selling point

the kind of stuff that does help shift consoles is making it a media centre and suchlike. i know a couple of guys at work who have an xbox to do that job and don't really use it for games at all

Venom

The more consoles become like PCs the less attractive they become. What made them great was that they were cheaper options to play games than a $2000 dollar gaming rig. That gap is narrowing, and consoles still aren't very upgradable.

King_Ghidra
29-09-2006, 11:59:53
very true

it's been cool with my 360 to share my pc's internet connection and be able to download patches, game updates and firmware upgrades for the box itself, but i don't know how many people out of the console customer base are in that situation

Considering that 60% of XBL owners are on Xbox Live and considering the huge amount of downloads it had, I'd say a lot.

Even the new HD-DVD player from Toshiba connects to the internet for updates, movie information, etc.

Here's something most wii owners will never see:

major achievement: it made my wife play computer games... and I can't think of a person less interested by it

as a way to increase the demographics of gamer, this is pretty brilliant

The word you're looking for is "Party Games". It's not a great game, I'd be the first to admit, but it's intuitive and deep enough (spins, two-character play, etc.) to have skill matter a bit. Same with Bowling. Can't argue about the rest of Wii Sports though, they really could have used the controller better.

I'm waiting for the crop of innovative Wii games that come out one or two years from now, when everyone understands how to program for it.
