OK, so it is that time of year again. I've had my current Nokia phone model for 1.5 years and it is looking old and out of date. I want a new phone with a decent quality camera (if it has a built in flash then it's even better), a built in MP3 player, and the closer it is to a world band phone the better (because I like to travel and it is nice to be able to use my phone while I'm over seas but it isn't absolutely vital). Other features which are nice but not make or break features include bluetooth, GPS, web access, smart phone, and a built in organizer.

The phone doesn't have to be bundled with one of the big three domestic wireless companies so feel free to throw any suggestions out there. To compare here are the latest offers from the big three domestic wireless carriers.

Verizon Wireless: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/GlobalNavControllerServlet

Cingular: http://www.cingular.com/indexc

T-Mobile: http://www.t-mobile.com/

Suggestions?

I've heard the Korean companies have been coming out with some really great phones lately though I have never owned one before. I've also seen a few of those slider style phones and I must say I like the design since it protects the camera lens from getting scratched in your pocket.

Can you get one that doubles as a colostomy bag?

Oerdin
21-08-2006, 15:10:38
I don't believe that is a standard feature.

So far these two phones are looking like my leading options.

The Motorola RAZR-GSM http://www.letstalk.com/reviews/expertreviewdtl.htm?pfId=1107

and the LG VX8500 http://www.letstalk.com/reviews/expertreviewdtl.htm?pfId=1132

Does anyone own either of these phones are maybe played with one of them?

It sucks that with the RAZR you have to either chose the world band version or the one with the better camera and music player but you can't have a version which is both a world phone and a decent camera/music player.

I'm pretty happy with my Sony ericsson K850i

Oerdin

That looks like a super sweet phone. I don't think they sell it in the US though. :(

I don't think it is. The k850i is a slider phone with a 2MP camera, up to 1GB of storage space, and other goodies which are not on the w810i. :(

There has to be a way to get a version of this phone which will work in the US and be able to charge using US electrical plugs.

The first one you linked (850i) isn't released yet.

This is the current version that MrG has.

I was thinking of getting one soon, but I might hang on for the 850i. That looks like a great phone.

According to many news articles the 810 is, or soon will be, available in the US.

Oerdin
21-08-2006, 16:25:31
Hmm, the 810 is listed on Sony Ericsson's US website. So maybe it has been released. The K850i does look like a better phone but it won't be released in Europe for another 2-3 months and it will take up to an additional year to make it to the US. It appears that the 810 might be Sony Ericsson's best offering in the US for some time.

I don't like Motorola phones, their software and menu systems seem bizarre - everything is the wrong way around.

Phones are overrated. After all, it's just blah blah

Oerdin

But now it is blah blah with pictures and music and GPS and internet.

It'sa interesting people aways show me their brandnew phones and all they do with it is taking pictures of me picking my nose and downlading some funny ringtone (or Pink Floyd soundbits as ringtones). For a while, then they got bored with it.

After a few cool phones I figured out it's a good idea to buy one

with a good battery
which is small and light
and makes "beep beep beep"
and is cheap

Too bad they don't make those anymore

Is what I'm getting. I'll let you know how it is once I get my hands on it.

I've just purchased a K800i:

http://www.infosyncworld.net/resources/products/sony_ericsson/sony_ericsson_k800i_i01.jpg

It's amazing. I had a Nokia N80 before hand and it beats the pants of that in just about every way! It's got a great media player, stable operating system (none of that symbian rubbish), 3.2 MegaPixel Sony Cybershot camera with 'BestPic!' (takes 9 pictures over the space of 1/10th of a second and you can save the best one) etc....

And it's the same size as the K700i, bit fat, but hey, it's 3G

And that's tiny for a 3G phone

Oerdin

Does the K700i play music?

with my cell phone, it allows me to communicate with other people who have cell phones and regular phones!!

That's the only reason I need it for. Who cares about all that other crap.
